Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal on Wednesday denounced President Trump's attacks on military service members, including the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and retired Adm. William McRaven, who oversaw the operation that killed Osama bin Laden.
"His discussions on Bill McRaven, as well as his previous discussions on John McCain and others have been something thats deeply disturbing to a lot of thoughtful people, McChrystal said on ABC's Powerhouse Politics podcast. The fact that he would take on people in this vitriolic manner, I think is pretty upsetting to people."
"And the fact that he would be dismissive of the kinds of service that people like John McCain and others have given is also disturbing," McChrystal added. "I dont think it builds up the kind of trust that military people depend upon."
The president earlier this month aggressively criticized McRaven, who over oversaw the 2011 operation that killed bin Laden. After McRaven called Trump's antagonistic relationship with the media a "threat to democracy," Trump accused him of political bias towards Democrats and suggested the U.S. took too long to hunt down bin Laden.
The McRaven controversy came as Trump has been fielding continued criticism over his relationship with the military, as his detractors slam his comments about prominent veterans, his decision to skip a visit to a World War I cemetery in France last month and the fact that Trump has not yet visited troops overseas.
McChrystal, who just released a new book called "Leaders: Myth and Reality" about prominent figures throughout history, told ABC that he does not agree with Trump's recent assertion that no one has been more "with" the military than he has. Trump has frequently pointed to administration's large budget for the military as a sign of his unflagging support.
[Funding is] not the best metric of whether you support the military," McChrystal said. "The size of the defense budget is not a measure of patriotism or connection with those in service."
I dont think that President Trump has developed as deep a real connection of trust with the military as perhaps he thinks he has," he added.
I believe you’re right, I’ve only heard President Trump praise our serving military.
Obama stooge bump for later....
Yo General; those attacks are on the Commander in Chief at the time - obama.
Maroon
Wasn’t he the guy who put epaulets on flight suits? The guys called them Elvis suits and threw them away as soon as he wasn’t in charge
Sorry moron. Military service does not come with a get out of jail free card.
I am not up on the other guy but criticizing McShame was appropriate!
—
He didn’t even criticize him. He simply failed to genuflect to him as some kind of hero when all he did is suck at what he did and get captured.
And as for him being a “hero” once he was a POW - I’ve seen the pictures of McCain when he was released compared to the pictures of other POWs. Guess which of them looks healthy and well fed?
Reporter who brought down Stanley McChrystal dies in car crash
I believe you’re thinking of retired AF Gen McPeak, he tried to change the dress uniform and he is a maroon also.
well, i would not wish to be a POW ....
but
McShame really made a fool of hisself as a Senator, especially in his latter years
I am ALMOST at the point of supporting something I’ve always opposed....mandatory retirement ages for anyone in high-power positions in government
(McShame, Feinstein, Ruth Ginsburg, Pelousy are just a few that come to mind....)
Being in the military and being a jerk aren’t mutually exclusive.
Seems to me that retired Gen McChrystal must combat his desire to mythologize McCain’s and Adm. William McRaven’s history.
Military officers who underperform after overpromising should be subject to rebuke from the Commander in Chief.
This is not a new phenomenon in US history. ALL military officers serve at the pleasure of the Commander in Chief.
Once they incur displeasure, life becomes much different.
Running for something General?

I’m thinking it might more be the case of the general running *from* something.
“Retired Gen. McChrystal: Trump’s attacks on military service members are ‘disturbing’”
This is the guy whose wife told him to attack General Robert E. Lee, so in recent days he publicly attacked General Lee. The purpose was to rehabilitate himself (McChrystal).
I have no use for him.
I find it more disturbing that McChrystal and others have decided to publically engage in obvious democrat party orchestrated political stunts.
They do have to be political. In fact, despite being a democrat, Obama fired him over comments he made.
I’m betting you’re right on.
Our military took an awful hit from the eight years of 0bama and his pathetic administration.
McChrystal is ignoring that McRaven attacked Trump first and that McCain and Trump were in a pissing contest.
Interesting that all are “McSomethings”
