Hyde-Smith co-sponsored resolution honoring confederate soldier for 'defending homeland:' CNN
The Hill ^ | 11/24/18 | John Bowden

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) reportedly co-sponsored a resolution in Mississippi's state Senate in 2007 that among other things honored a Confederate soldier for his efforts to "defend his homeland."

CNN's KFile reported Hyde-Smith co-sponsored a resolution honoring Effie Lucille Nicholson Pharr, a then-92-year-old Mississippi resident whose father, Thomas Jefferson Nicholson, served as a soldier in the Confederate army.

The resolution, which can be found online, refers to Nicholson Pharr as "the last known living 'Real Daughter' of the Confederacy living in Mississippi" and to her father's work to "defend his homeland and contribut[e] to the rebuilding of the country" during and after the war.

"[T]his resolution -- which ostensibly is about honoring the 'daughter' -- really seems to be an excuse to glorify the Confederate cause," Nina Silber, president of the Society of Civil War Historians told CNN about the resolution.

It "rests on an odd combination of perpetuating both the Confederate legacy and the idea that this was not really in conflict with being a good citizen of the nation," she added.

The senator's campaign did not immediately return a request for comment from The Hill on her support for the resolution.

Hyde-Smith has faced a barrage of controversies about race in recent days due to controversial statements made by the senator, who is facing Democrat Mike Espy in a runoff election for her seat on Tuesday.

The senator was criticized for joking that she would attend a "public hanging" when prompted by a supporter during a campaign event, and battled reports Saturday that she attended a school in her youth specifically designed to avoid integration of Mississippi public schools during the civil rights era.

They are trying to steal a seat like they did in Alabama with Jones.

We saw how that worked out with the Jones Kavanaugh vote.

Dems are baby murdering / culture suicide / Satan worshipping bastards. I wouldn’t vote for a Democrat for county dog catcher.

But they can keep fooling a few morons and buying or stealing votes it seems.

Tomorrow look for an article documenting that she once referred to the segregated, Jim Crow-era U.S. military that waded ashore on D-Day as “the greatest generation.”

Oh, how could she.

However, the whiff of scandal dogged Espy’s tenure at USDA. As The Washington Post reported in 1994, there were months of inquiry related to his alleged acceptance of various gifts and perks, including sports tickets, lodging and airfare. Later that year, White House officials discovered that a foundation run by Tyson Foods had provided a $1,200 scholarship to Espy’s girlfriend, Patricia Dempsey.

On Dec. 29, 1994, Espy resigned his post at USDA and in August 1997 he was indicted on charges of receiving improper gifts. However, he refused to enter into a plea bargain agreement with the Independent Counsel, sending the case to trial.

In December 1998, he was acquitted of all 30 criminal charges, despite the fact that Tyson Foods had previously pleaded guilty to felony charges of providing gifts to Espy and more than $20 million had been spent preparing and trying his case, according to news reports back then.
The jury deliberated less than 10 hours before finding Espy not guilty. As one of the jurors told The Post at the time, “This was the weakest, most bogus thing I ever saw. I can’t believe [Independent Counsel Donald] Smaltz ever brought this to trial.”

The Southern soldiers were patriots.

Sometimes I kinda hate that three of my ancestors came down from the North to defeat them.

The pearl clutchers at CNN might not be able to understand, but the Confederacy is looked at differently by the people of Mississippi. This isn’t going to help them in their quest to steal a senate seat.

Mississippians are not going to be virtue signaled like the housewives of the suburbs of Chicago etc. All this talk of public hanging and the Confederacy might actually fire up her base.

This evil smear shows nothing but how desperate the DemonShits are to deny this seat to our PRESIDENT Trump, thereby helping them to get communists appointed as judges. Don’t let them get away with it. SUPPORT HYDE-SMITH, RINO or not.

You point out a key issue in races like this, which will become more common as the Democrats keep moving to the Marxist Left. That issue is the Libertarian Party candidates (who don’t stand a chance in hell of even winning second place), who are spoilers and have cause the Republicans House seats, including this year.

Either we all hang together or surely we will hang separately.

No time for ego-trips and spoil-sports. The Democrats are the enemies of America’s freedom and Constitution. Let’s defeat them on every possible battlefield and leave the “liberation” philosophy to discussion groups.

What was interesting about the Espy prosecution was the fact that the entities accused of paying him the bribes were convicted, and he faced charges of accepting those bribes and was acquitted. Tells you more about the effect of a DC jury than anything else.
