Hyde-Smith co-sponsored resolution honoring confederate soldier for 'defending homeland:' CNN
The Hill ^ | 11/24/18 | John Bowden

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) reportedly co-sponsored a resolution in Mississippi's state Senate in 2007 that among other things honored a Confederate soldier for his efforts to "defend his homeland."

CNN's KFile reported Hyde-Smith co-sponsored a resolution honoring Effie Lucille Nicholson Pharr, a then-92-year-old Mississippi resident whose father, Thomas Jefferson Nicholson, served as a soldier in the Confederate army.

The resolution, which can be found online, refers to Nicholson Pharr as "the last known living 'Real Daughter' of the Confederacy living in Mississippi" and to her father's work to "defend his homeland and contribut[e] to the rebuilding of the country" during and after the war.

"[T]his resolution -- which ostensibly is about honoring the 'daughter' -- really seems to be an excuse to glorify the Confederate cause," Nina Silber, president of the Society of Civil War Historians told CNN about the resolution.

It "rests on an odd combination of perpetuating both the Confederate legacy and the idea that this was not really in conflict with being a good citizen of the nation," she added.

The senator's campaign did not immediately return a request for comment from The Hill on her support for the resolution.

Hyde-Smith has faced a barrage of controversies about race in recent days due to controversial statements made by the senator, who is facing Democrat Mike Espy in a runoff election for her seat on Tuesday.

The senator was criticized for joking that she would attend a "public hanging" when prompted by a supporter during a campaign event, and battled reports Saturday that she attended a school in her youth specifically designed to avoid integration of Mississippi public schools during the civil rights era.

The pearl clutchers at CNN might not be able to understand, but the Confederacy is looked at differently by the people of Mississippi. This isn’t going to help them in their quest to steal a senate seat.

this is all about the Black female vote. Period.

Heads up for massive voter fraud. This is their standard play book. Press a controversy and use that as cover for low Republican turnout. When in fact the destroy the votes or under report.

Someone registered to vote in Mississippi could write him in. Better than voting for one of the other Democrats, Espy or Smith.

Confederate soldiers fought bravely, whether or not they were on the “right” side. What were they supposed to do -— just let their land be overrun? Were they all honorable men? Or course not, any more than all Union soldiers were honorable. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t right bravely, and aren’t worthy of veneration. My ancestors were southerners. Being raised in the north, I believe the North was in the right, but be that as it may, honor is due to all who fought. And if my ancestors fought bravely, then they should receive honor for it.

Actually, the Southern soldiers were defending their homeland.

It was not politically correct, back then, to allow huge armies of tens of thousands to invade your state.

As opposed to now, where you are racist if you oppose tens of millions of illegals invading your state.

Lots of Blacks on the jury.

It took all the whites on the jury to acquit him.

Hyphen-Smith will still win by a large margin.

People said the same thing about Roy Moore.

In the end, people who found Moore loathsome stayed home, confident he'd still win without their votes.

SO F'n WHAT? Texas State employees get Confederate Heroes Day (Robert E Lee's birthday) off and have for years.

Stop apologizing as if you've done something wrong.

Wow. With this type of media smear going down, black people in Mississippi might now decide to not vote for her!

What a lot of people do not understand is most Confederate soldiers fought to defend their homes from Union soldiers. They did not own slaves, did not come from families who did, and bought into the tales of battlefield glory by those who needed men to fight.

If that’s a hit piece, she’s better than I thought....Trump backs her so I’m voting for her....just hope the McDaniel cult didn’t screw the pooch by keeping her from winning outright during the first election....
