President Donald Trump is defending a Republican U.S. senator from Mississippi who praised one of her own supporters by saying she would attend a public hanging if the supporter invited her a remark that has stirred strong emotions in a state with a history of racially motivated lynchings.
Trump said at the White House on Tuesday that Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith is a tremendous woman who loves the people of Mississippi and the U.S.
A video published Nov. 11 shows Hyde-Smith praising a supporter in Tupelo by saying: If he invited me to a public hanging, Id be on the front row. She said in a statement that the expression was an exaggerated expression of regard and said it is ridiculous to read any negative connotation into it, but she has refused to answer questions about it.
Walmart asked Hyde-Smith to return a $2,000 campaign contribution because of the hanging remark.
It was just sort of said in jest, Trump said, defending Hyde-Smith. Shes a tremendous woman and its a shame that she has to go through this.
Hyde-Smiths campaign did not respond to questions from The Associated Press about whether it would refund Walmarts contribution. Campaign spokeswoman Melissa Scallan said the senator was focusing on debate preparation.
(snip) -- Bishop Ronnie Crudup, senior pastor of predominantly black New Horizon Church International in Jackson, said Hyde-Smiths hanging remark was highly offensive.
That statement has historical context to it, and it shows that she doesnt really know black people, said Crudup, who is supporting Espy. This is something that has everybody in an uproar because, in 2018, you want to think that were beyond this. And probably for most of my folks, too, what makes it worse is not to apologize about it.

Thomas Sowell's lynching comment was not in jest.
He mentioned that 102 people were on the Mayflower. Just wondering ...... to your knowledge are you related at all?
Ancestor is Elder John Brewster.
Rush’s Thanksgiving show is always the best. It makes me cry sometimes. Amazing that such an amazing country started with such a pitiful little ragtag bunch.
Fantastic.
Shes half as stupid as Yankee posters opining on Mississippi
Bullshit
And unlike you I was there
The only klan activity I ever saw in Mississippi in the 1970s was at Hardy Jr High in Jackson in early January 1970 when forced busing had just taken effect and a few klan marched out front on Ellis ave and the teachers closed all the blinds
Later in 1976 the Indiana klan came down and marched in Tupelo over a labor disputes at some factory there
A man who worked for my dad as project manager of our pipeline job there turned out to be klan and carried a Thompson class III and attacked an Ole Miss student journalist on camera with his hood off....with an axe handle
The Tupelo paper the Daily Journal
Front page....my dad fired him on the spot
He was from West Virginia....I used to smoke weed and party with him....a Vietnam vet....nobody had any idea
At Oxford and at State late 70s I never saw any klan activity
I was in Oxford 1976-81 and frequented State during the fuzzy buffer period when southern hippies ran State student govt...I knew them
I really dislike when non Mississippians act like the klan was common and had support in the state
The only time the klan was respected in Mississippi was during reconstruction when it could be argued it had a purpose....thst was Wheelers klan to resist occupation
I am 7th generation Mississippian descended from Raspberry Byrd and Pappy Sullivan who founded Sullivans Hollow and possibly from Dunbar of Natchez elite
I have personally know. 3 klan members in my whole life and one was from West Virginia as already mentioned and one in Beaumont Texas with whose estranged wife hed abused I had an affair and one a distant relative via marriage who had allegedly lynched a black rapist in Shubuta Mississippi in the 1920s
Im sixty and have known 100s of southerners
It aint Hollywood and the klan has never been respected by common folk and especially rich folks
And never in big numbers like the Midwest klan of the Wilson era
Why perpetuate canards?
Woman wears a museum forager cap and the south haters rush out to this forum
These threads really show freeperdom in its true nature...not very pretty

LOL. That was innocently intended as humor.
You don't have much sense of humor, do you.

I perused your extensive profile page. Very thorough.
There I noted that you have a nearly unlimited distaste, bordering on a neurosis against FReepers and others who you suspect don't appreciate people from the "South" as much as you think they should. You even have a ridiculous list of supposed "offenders".
You do seem to have a huge chip on a shoulder of that 6'4" frame about being from the south.
You spend an unbalanced amount of time here, post after post, criticizing numerous FReepers for their lack of a "proper love and understanding" for the "South".
As I said I looked at your entire profile page. Very impressive .......... a very lovely family, GREAT, great poochies (and one cat) ........ yet strangely, in all those pictures, you never smile. I wonder why. Maybe you're smiling inside.
In my 72 years I have learned that complete self awareness is sometimes elusive ....... even after your 60 years.
Good luck.........
younfall so readily into that northern trap of thinking you know best for everyone else meanwhile youre totally unaware of your own hubris
Ive been here 18 years

And there has always been a cadre here who work in unison pushing a Politically correct history of south equals slavery and must be demonized and some of us push back
Over the years many of them were zotted for offenses often being soft of homosexual agenda and a few left as Rudy Giuliani fans during that purge in 2007 and many left as nevertrumpers...no surprise
Some are simply disrupters
Other are creatures I cant quite grasp....but I realize national review is infected with them and Dinesh is part of that
They say they oppose tearing down statues but they are gleeful when it happens
Over the years some have been outed as provocateurs here to shame the forum for our foes
I have read so much crap here from them for 18 years that if youre really a newbie you wouldnt believe it
Vile stuff....they go personal immediately....Ive noticed on occasion personal admissions from them and its about what youd expect
So I oppose them....you siimply are ignorant of the context but you can figure it out if youre that curious
Pennsylvania is not under the cultural attack weve been for a couple of generations now.....and when it comes from your own side...ostensibly..its worse
Why its tolerated here Ive never understood

He left with his feelings hurt said we were all racists
Is that you?
You posted your little thread here just to preen...so typical
Given Mississippi whites vote 88-92% GOP as opposed to where you live Pennsylvania where whites vote was 56%
Maybe you should pay to your own state....just a thought
Your freepmail was appreciated
I did not see it yet when I wrote my reply
I apologize
If you are a newbie there is a lot to know about the history of the forum
And a lot of it is surprising
Thank God Lynard Skynard spoke up with "Sweet Home Alabama" to bury Young's ignorant hate.
