THE Spanish prime minister has threatened to reject the Brexit withdrawal agreement unless the European Union hands Madrid a guaranteed veto over the future of Gibraltar in any trade deal between Britain and Europe.

“If Britain leaves the EU w/o an agreement it could result in a period of chaos as hard borders suddenly go up and all movement of goods is subject to inspections and possible tariffs on both sides of the border. The result is that ordinary trade and commerce could slow to a crawl.”

Your assertion is based on a ludicrous assumption.

That assumption is that the EU member countries will cut themselves off from trade with Britain until proper tariffs and duties are applied on all sides.

It’s FAR more likely that the result would be a complete annihilation of the EU as the member countries seek to preserve ONE TRILLION DOLLARS in bilateral trade.

Germany alone exports $90bil to Britain. And they import $40bil in oil. Ag trade through the tunnel with France amounts to $20bil. London’s banks and stock market are the de facto center of Europe, will almost all final settlement occurring there.

Go ahead and shut that down, for even a few weeks.

The EU dare not.

If Britain was SMART they would pay no attention to the EU threats and exit. THEN negotiate.

I am glad Spain is making this idiotic demand. If the U.K. has a new Brexit referendum Spain’s position will help bolster the vote in favor of the Brexit.

Spain lost Gibraltar long ago and since then over time Gilbratar has moved away from Spain, as the people of Gilbraltar said when THEY voted to stay with the U.K.

If the UK banks were considering a move to Europe, they’d have done so by now.

The big problem for BREXIT is the fate of the ‘soft border’ between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (component part of the United Kingdom). The negotiated settlement (1998) of the “Irish Troubles” (IRA & Ulster violence) included explicit guarantees of free movement between these two areas.

If/when the UK exits the EU while Ireland remains a member of the EU, that border, without negotiations, will become a trade barrier. This violates that “Good Friday Treaty of 1998” and most people want to avoid rocking that boat.

As for Spain and its demands, the UK should remind Spain of Wellington’s Peninsular War of 1808-1814 where many a young Brit lost their life to the French (Napoleon) Invaders of Portugal & Spain. FYI: As bad as the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 was, this theater of the Napoleonic Wars probably exceeded that war in terms of overall casualties when you look at combined military and civilian casualties of both the direct fighting and the famines that came afterwards.

“that border, without negotiations, will become a trade barrier”

Not really. Another red herring.

If Britain exits and does NOTHING about the N Ireland border, that would put Ireland in the position of choosing whether to make it a hard border. Britain doesn’t have to make a choice.

And it would most certainly test the will of the EU as to whether they would be willing to cut off a member nation not playing by their rules.

The European Union wants to steal Northern Ireland and Gibraltar from the UK.

That is a cause for war.

This has gone on long enough.
The UK needs to leave and tell the EU to pound sand.

Spain used to be my favorite country over in Europe a few decades ago.

No more.

I am not primarily referring to UK banks. I am referring to the huge multi-national banks which have long treated London as the financial capital of Europe. If the UK is separating from Europe that isn’t going to make sense. And FTR, some of the banks already have moved or announced plans to do so.

Spain then needs to leave Ceuta, or they’re hypocrites.

EU member states can’t make bilateral trade deals with non-EU states. That’s part of the EU deal. The EU makes trade deals for the whole bloc.

We have a winner! While we’re at it and if I’m not mistaken, Berengaria of Navarre was married to Richard I and was queen of England for some time. Reclaim the North of Spain!

So why does the new Spanish Navy have clear-bottomed boats? To see the old Spanish Navy.

I am at a loss as to why the UK cannot simply tell the rest of Europe to take the EU and shove it. What are they going to do, invade? That’s been tried before, and didn’t work out too well - and that’s when the Krauts actually had men in their army.
