Nearly a year ago, Democrats pulled off an upset in the South against a Republican candidate hobbled by controversy. Now, theyre hoping to duplicate that feat in Mississippi, in the last Senate election of the cycle.
Virtually no prognosticator has given the party much of a chance. But this past week, the Republican in the race, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), has been caught twice making wild and insensitive remarks: the first expressing comfort attending a public hanging; the second openly musing about suppressing Democratic votes. All of which has encouraged the party to rethink whether the long shot Democrat in the race, former U.S. secretary of agriculture Mike Espy, is really that big a long shot at all.

Since you think that the citizens of MS and AL have the “intellectual capacity of an amoeba” what do you think of the citizens of your home state of California?
Hey, you really got it backwards.
Trump nor Kavanaugh NEVER said anything racist.
And I spelled out what to say, not “what some consider”.
Totally missed the point.
I agree on some of what you wrote, about them already calling us racist, etc., but we don’t give them ammo.
What do you say about a state where otherwise only 1/3 of the residents normally vote, and half are black, and now almost all the blacks will vote (democrat)? Most of them don’t bother, but now they will.
You know, maybe you don’t know or live around any black people, but if we’re EVER going to get them to walk away from the democrats, talking about lynching someone is NOT the way.
Most of the blacks I know live out here in the country and are NOT urban. They don’t even realize it, but they’re conservatives. I’ve ben trying half my life to get them to see that democrats don’t represent their values. Some have, but every time progress is made someone comes up and start talking nonsense, and you bet the democrat-media is going to spin it hard.
Why give them those openings?
Lots of Republicans down South here, FRiend.
Yes, and some of them even try to get black votes. Not by pandering to them like the democrats do, but by explaining hard-working conservative values that many Southern Blacks have.
You bet the media and the Black Congressional Caucus is going to spout off about every Southern White Republican as a Confederate, but most Southern States already have Southern White Republican governors, representatives and senators already. So most blacks know it’s a lot of bullschitt.
Still, you go talking about hanging people, and it’s just too close to lynching’s that used to go on. It’s better not to talk about hanging people, and rather emphasis law and order issues, that yes, Southern Blacks mostly also share the same view on.
You just lied again. Hyde-Smith NEVER “talked about lynching someone.” Ever. What she said was (about a local cattle rancher who is a strong supporter of hers) If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row.” It’s about how strong of a supporter he was. NOBODY mentioned race, black people or African-Americans. You lied and passed on the democrat smear that it had something to do with race. It did not. It was about how strong of a supporter and well-known person the cattle rancher is.
The media tried to say calling a Mexican judge “Mexican” was racist of Trump. If you don’t believe that, what hole have you been living in for the last three years? The media tried to say Kavanaugh was a rapist for writing “devil’s triangle” in his high school yearbook. Doesn’t matter if it was true or not, they lied about it just like you did “lynching.” Three people all said it was a quarters game, but did the truth matter to you or the media? Come on.
OK, fine. Not lynching. Hanging. Again, don’t need to talk about things like that.
Regardless about what you mistakenly think about me, the goal of keeping democrats out of office down here just got unnecessarily harder.
A long time ago when I was a kid, I witness what was going to be a race war right in the street.
It was caused by hard heads on both sides. AND they wouldn’t shut up!
But a Baptist preacher got in and started calming people down. He didn’t defend ANYONE, but talked normal to both sides without bringing up fightin’ words to either side.
We don’t HAVE to be at war because the media says so. And I acknowledge that 90% of it comes from the media and black democrats, not the white folks. But just use a little discretion.
What, exactly, would be enough “discretion” for you? If Ron DeSantis saying “monkey up” Florida’s economic prosperity is somehow racist or this joke about how people don’t want to be seen at hangings but she’d be in the front row if her cattle rancher friend had one are going to be reported as “racist,” I really do think it’s more valuable to get just how obsessed with race the left is out there and in plain sight. It’s like when Newt - after being questioned repeatedly about what Trump had said to Billy Bush on a bus when they both worked for NBC - said to Megyn Kelly: “You’re obsessed with sex.” It slays because it’s true.
My bonafides are VERY well known on this site. So I won’t defend my conservatism beyond a million things I’ve already written and posted here for 20+ years.
You’re very angry with me in particular because of what I said, and I understand, because I actually agree with you about the democrats and media.
But we share the same overall goals, no?
I just want to see the Republicans keep their majority in the Senate, and continue to peel away minorities who are just the same as you and me. Right now, things are too close.
But don’t confuse my simple discretion for appeasement. There’s a difference even you and I can agree on I’m sure.
I don’t want to lose, I want us to win.
I don’t question your bona fides and we want the same thing, yes, but I do think we need to push back on this stuff because voters, quite frankly, are sick of it. When stand-up comics make jokes about “slaves” in the movie “Ben-Hur” and interest groups and commentators say that word can only refer to black slaves in the south that shows you how far down the rabbit hole we’ve gone with this garbage. There are votes to be gained by pushing back and supporting candidates that won’t be politically correct. Mourdock was a mess and we should never support someone that undisciplined but DeSantis and Hyde-Smith? Absolutely.
“...you should not forget AL and MS. The people in these two states have the intellectual capacity of an amoeba.”
I know a lot of those MS “hillbillies.” They are undoubtedly brighter and wiser than anyone who would write the foregoing.
I’m figuring you for a troll of some stripe. Who you working for?
You are one arrogant, condescending son of a bitch. Nah, you come from worse than a dog.
Who in the hell made you the keeper of the brain?
You belong over at DU with that superior attitude. Piss off.
“Still, you go talking about hanging people...”
But she DIDN’T talk about hanging people! She said some guy was important enough she’d show up front row at a public hanging if he asked - which ASSUMES a public hanging is a repulsive thing!
That is the whole point of the expression, which I remember hearing as a kid. Not in the South, and not in connection in any way with blacks. The whole point was that a public hanging - which they used to do with whites too - was repulsive and NOT something you would want to go to. But if “X” asked, you’d do it out of respect for X.
...”I referred to accepting an invitation to a speaking engagement,” said Hyde-Smith, who is also a cattle rancher, in a statement Sunday. “In referencing the one who invited me, I used an exaggerated expression of regard, and any attempt to turn this into a negative connotation is ridiculous.”

I understand your point and agree.
Roy didnt do a single immoral thing.
Roy is a West Point grad who actually served in Vietnam.
Trump didnt serve anywhere.
Trump is a far worse man, morally, and before God.
Thank you for that clarification.
ANYONE who would say such a thing has the IQ of a lettuce sandwich.
“ANYONE who would say such a thing has the IQ of a lettuce sandwich.”
Well this “lettuce sandwich” scores 142! These two states collectively send really marginal people to Washington. I am sure there are smart folks living in both places, but they sure as hell don’t run for public office. Thud Cochran, Haley Barbour, Jeff Sessions, and let’s not forget Roy Moore. And this “appointed female replacement for Cochran is a walking disaster. Every time she opens her mouth, she makes Mike Espy smile And yeah, hopefully she will win, but what will she do to improve the Senate except to make sure the R’s stay in control?
