The Democrats’ Beto Problem
NRO ^ | 7 Nov 2018 | Kyle Smith

Tuesday showed that the enduring deep-blue coalition of the future Democrats are always talking about still lies in the future.

The Democrats had a huge opportunity to unseat Ted Cruz last night. They blew it by thinking a gentry Hollywood-style liberal was the right candidate for Texas.

The not-overly-beloved Senator Cruz defeated Representative Beto O’Rourke by 2.6 percentage points in a race an incumbent Republican should have expected to win easily, on the same night Republican governor Greg Abbott won reelection by 13 points. Yet the Democratic reaction to O’Rourke’s loss is not, as far as I can tell, “Maybe we should have listened more closely to Texas” or even “I can’t believe we burned so much money on a longshot,” but “Losing narrowly is sort of a win.” As comedian-actor Ike Barinholtz put it on Twitter, “Ah sh*t Beto didn’t make it to the Senate. Oh well at least he’ll be president soon.” Only once has a sitting House member been elected president (James Garfield), but, hey, some Democrats point out, Abraham Lincoln was a congressman who lost a Senate race before being elected president. Yes, Democrats actually think comparing Beto to Lincoln is reasonable.

“The not-overly-beloved Senator Cruz defeated Representative Beto O’Rourke by 2.6 percentage points in a race an incumbent Republican should have expected to win easily, on the same night Republican governor Greg Abbott won reelection by 13 points.”

The real question to be answered is why Texas stayed with Cruz after he stepped on his d!ck so badly in his Presidential “run.” Obviously, Texans were o.k. with Gregg Abbott, but they still were not sold on Cruz. It would be interesting to look at vote totals to see if Abbott voters didn't vote for Cruz, or if they voted for Beto. So the Republicans dodged a bullet here. The next question is what to do about the other a$$hole Senator you have in Texas? Cornhole is up in two years! Is he planning to run? Will he run like Cruz? Is there a Republican Conservative replacement for him? The Senate numbers favored the Rs this election, but the next two elections, it will be the other way around with more like twice as many R seats up as RAT ones. It would be a sorry situation to have The Senate go RAT along with Trump's re-election. I guess part of the answer lies in just how good a job the Senate does the next two years. They have a long way to go to be on my list of exemplary bodies.

Which is why “Drunken Irish Bob O’Rourke” should be referred to continuously as the next Democrat Disaster for the next few years.

Harp on drunk driving and cultural appropriation.

IMHO, Beto would be perfect for Biden as VP, though Joe’s too damn old for the job, and he’s white.

Beta Boy/Gillum. If I had to pick a Dem ticket today that would be it. Dems won’t pick a retread with beltway sewer stink on them.

The GOP better be working overtime to make sure he is exposed for is true intent. If Obama can get elected any idiot can. Beto wants to be that idiot. Take him out now or suffer the consequences later.

I agree, it won’t be one of those septuagenarians. Younger candidates like Beto, Castro, or Kamala will make their grab for the brass ring in 2020.

Beetle can print campaign money like the kenyan did. It’s hard for me to see anybody beating him to the nom at the moment. Things might change, of course.

East TX, once solidly Democrat, clearly saved TCruz from defeat.

I wouldn’t jump on “illegal” so much as “fraud”. Statistically speaking any county that is 70%-75% for one candidate smells like ballot stuffing more than anything else. Like the article said, the Governor won by 13%. Unless Cruz is widely hated (I am sure some people don’t like him, but by that margin?) it’s hard to believe that anyplace would come to greater than 3-1 for one candidate over another without fraud.

His candidacy led to down ballot success for Democrats in judicial offices, tax offices, etc in Houston and elsewhere.

His “brand” sold well to convince people to “Buy Team Dem”.

This wasn’t just about the Senate seat.

Democrats are children - all hero worship and image and no reality or substance - but there are so many of them that it really is scary.....

His looks???

I think he’s appropriately named Robert Francis, because...

He looks like a mix of RFKennedy and Francis the Talking Mule.
