Whoever is first IC, incident commander, on the incident names the fire. They usually use the location origin of the fire. Wolf Creek becomes Wolf Fire. Camp Creek becomes Camp Fire. Etc. Etc.
Yes Hubby was a 34 year firefighter who fought many wildfires.

Just spoke with my oldest son who works at the hospital. He spent the day there moving patients out. I was just reading one news report about rescuing 6 people in the hospital basement. He was one of the ones in the basement which he just told me is actually a safe sealed bunker for such events.

Said the the whole time they were in there they were in contact with the fire dept whole told them to stay there where it was safe.

Anyway he is safe and back in Chico

Glad he is safe. Kern County Fire Dept currently has 3 dozer teams, 6 engines, and more on the Camp Fire since yesterday.

You can probably thank the greens who pushed through regulations preventing the thinning out of undergrowth and removal of dead wood because it would inconvenience some bug or critter.

The late great Dr. Bill Wattenburg lived in that area, and used to advance that very argument on his radio show.

Thank you for the link. I’ve done a lot of hiking in that area. Beautiful country. Prayers up for all.

I’m surprised there isn’t an ongoing live thread on FR for these fires. I know it’s busy news day...but FR always has live threads for emergency events.

The #WoolseyFire has caused an evacuation order for Malibu. The #CampFire is growing still and so both NoCa and SoCa are fighting life-theatening fires.

Pepperdine is under a partial evac order, parts of the 101 are shut down, it’s awful. We have friends up north near Butte Canyon who have evac’d.

I realize that.     So they should have called it the "Camp Creek Road Fire" or the "Camp Creek Fire", just not the "Camp Fire" like it was an ignorant camper that didn't know how to bank, bury or extinguish his fire properly.     You hear on the news, "the campfire still continues to burn out of control", and it brings to mind a totally different image than it should.

And "Crush Your Butts Dead Out!"

The first five confirmed deaths have been reported by the Butte County Sheriff. Alas, I fear that this will be the first of many reports.. Sadly, it was in a line of cars trying to evacuate..

Chico State is about 20 miles west of Paradise, there's a sizable town (covered in trees) between the fire and the university, so it is unlikely to be burned by the fire.

Impacted? Certainly, thick smoke is all throughout Chico, ashfall is sporadic depending on wind direction, and many students live in outlying areas of Chico where the rent is cheaper.

The ag campus for Butte College is in the middle of the evacuation zone, and I've not heard anything recently as to the status - on the positive side, they aren't surrounded by trees, have a good firebreak around the campus and in all likelihood, will be perfectly fine when the fire is put out.

Hey, good luck to you. Chances are very good that you’ll have your house waiting for you, don’t stress out while you’re away.

City of Malibu
@CityMalibu

Fire is burning out of control, heading into populated areas of Malibu. All residents evacuate now dlvr.it/Qqsydv

I saw that notice too. I’m afraid there’s going to be more like that.

James Woods is doing yeoman work on his Twitter feed listing missing persons and contacts, evacuation centers, etc.

These fires are so awful. I’m in Florida so they don’t affect me, but I hate to see what’s happening out there- my prayers are for calming winds and rising humidity.

Everyone in California knows that fires are named after locations and wouldn’t think that. Lol

I’m watching KTLA, they’re in the parking lot of the Good Nite Inn at the 101 and Las Virgenes. Embers just got into the roof and it’s on fire.

Astounding. This morning I could see the smoke cloud from here in OC at least 50 miles away. And a few times I’ve smelled smoke... has to be from the Woolsey Fire since there’s been no reports of fire in Orange County.

That is a VERY frightening picture-——looks like something from a creepy sci-fi film.

Yeah, these California brushfires can be terrifying when they’re close. We had two near me last year, maybe six miles to the east. I could see smoke from the one in the pic this morning and I’m at least 50 miles away. Probably a lot more.

Even when you are miles away you aren’t safe- hot embers will get carried by the wind and land on your roof, in your trees... if they get sucked into your attic vents you’re in huge trouble.
