Without saying a word, a mysterious man in black clutching a semi-automatic pistol opened fire on a California bar packed with college students celebrating "country night" Wednesday — claiming the lives of at least 12 patrons, including a veteran sheriff's sergeant nearing retirement, before officers found the gunman dead.
Hundreds of people -- including students from California Lutheran University, private Christian school Pepperdine University and California State University Channel Islands -- were inside Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif., for the country music event when shots suddenly rang out at about 11:20 p.m., Ventura County police said. Police said at least 30 shots were fired and the gunman, armed with a .45-caliber handgun, used a smoke device to disorient and confuse his targets.

In AZ you would be allowed to carry a concealed weapon into a bar provided: you have have a valid Concealed Weapons Permit, did not consume alcohol, and if the bar allowed it. If you violated one of the three you would be in big trouble.

Most likely also true. But it has been recognized that the drugs can be a serious factor...

There's a lot of wiggle room on that one. While consuming any alcoholic beverage is an automatic fail for carrying, the notice must must be posted properly and legitimately so you can know. And in fact out-of-staters enjoying constitutional carry can just say "i didn't see the sign" and get an automatic free pass.
I noticed a Changing Hands bookstore in Phoenix had a proper sign posted by the front door, but no liquor license next to it. They had a separate restricted access section in the back with a bar and tasting room, liquor license posted but no proper sign next it. This is not a legal notice, and if you're carrying, you don't have to say anything or do anything as long as you don't drink. I don't bother pointing it out either, not my call to make sure they get it right.
I’m a CLU alumnus and contrary to what you may think, it is a LIBERAL arts college with emphasis on liberal. I attended for a hard science degree / mathematics and as a conservative in the 80’s, I was definitely in the minority and suspect it is as far left and liberal as any other university today. Even in the 80’s, the university was embracing of homosexuality, immorality, abortion, etc. Just look at the ELCA that funds it and you will have a good idea as to what the university holds dear.
Despite any of that, this is tragic and disturbs me greatly.

Just heard on CBS radio he was first LEO through the door. I assumed he was present when the shooting started and the killer got the drop on him, thus the question.
Well, there is the law, and then there is what some people do to protect themselves. Wish someone there had been armed regardless.
Agreed. My point was, law-abiding people usually follow the law, so it’s not surprising that there would have been a dearth of armed responders inside the establishment.
I’m old. Sometimes I don’t catch stuff. :-)
