Trump said this is the best possible outcome. Rhetoric aside, it makes sense at least two ways:
- As Scott Adams noted, it’s like the dog chasing a car: makes a lot of nods and effort, but then is faced with “I caught it - now what?”
- Consider “keep your friends close, and your enemies closer”: by just barely getting the House, they’ll have to work closely with Trump to get anything done, and can’t play obstructionist since they’re in control(ish).
Remember: Trump is a pragmatist, not an idealist. From his perspective, this couldn’t get better.
OF COURSE it could all be better: genuine MAGA Republicans could be in decisive control of both houses of Congress and could be acting energetically to remove all obstacles to enacting the complete MAGA agenda. Of course that would be better.
But we will have to try to make the best of the current situation, and better control of the Senate was the single most important issue at stake yesterday.
