Virginias Senate election did not take long to resolve. Incumbent Democrat Tim Kaine was declared the winner over Corey Stewart immediately after 7 p.m. Eastern.
As three Virginia Republicans hold their breath about the outcomes of the House elections incumbents Barbara Comstock and Dave Brat, and challenger Denver Riggleman some will wonder if the party partially set its fate in the June 12 primary. If Nick Freitas or even E. W. Jackson had won the GOP nomination for Senate, maybe the Virginia Democratic party would have at least had to expend some resources protecting Kaine.

Bush League Republicans have ruined Virginia.
We are now outnumbered by northeast transplants and illegal aliens.
A Bush League Republican can’t win, either, the National Review is wrong.
Another candidate would have just lost by less - which is still losing.
I think it is more than Bush styled GOP. I think it has to do with that government complex on the Potomac. That bunch probably votes 80% for the dems because they see money in their pockets taken from the fly over country.
I recall a car trip to NJ in 08 to attend a funeral. With most of the area between No Fla and DC in a virtual depression, when I got near the DC beltway, I felt I was in
a financial haven. New cars, well dressed individuals and no signs of financial trouble.
Doesn’t matter who the candidate was.
The people who run the VAGOP work for the Democrats, and until that changes Virginia will get deeper and deeper blue.
NRO is really a worthless rag and Geraghty is a moron. These guys are no doubt still pleasuring themselves to Gillespie’s 18k vote loss to Warner in 2014 as if they could maybe get over the hump with the right candidate.
The only reason Gillespie was that close was because NoVA was caught sleeping. Trump wasn’t president, Warner was polling double digits ahead and no one had any particular worries of Warner losing by not showing up.
There is no establishment R who would have won in VA this year, and there will be no more GOP senators from VA again, barring some fluke or Menendez-type possible opponent. They would probably lose closer, but so what? The DC suburbs now dominate the state.
As Big Government grew during the post Reagan period Virginia became more Democrat.
Before George W. Bush was President Virginia was still Republican, low crime and English speaking.
None of that is true anymore.
Had the border been secured as promised in the last amnesty we may have had a fighting chance.
GHW Bush had other ideas.
Globalists don’t care what jersey people wear.
The Bush Plan for North Mexico is paramount.
VA is firmly now a blue state and as the demographics continue to change it will become even more so.
VA is solid blue. No Rep has won statewide office in 8 years. Mass immigration and domestic migration from the Northeast have changed the demographics forever. VA is gone. Corey is not the problem.
Yep, it all went wrong when GWB created DHS, TSA and the million of Democrats who moved to DC area following the free money.
They should have put up the pastor.
No Republican was going to win.
When will NoVa globalist RINOs start voting for Conservative Republicans?
Perhaps, perhaps not. If the RNC had helped Stewart just a tiny bit or HELL JUST ENDORSED HIM he'd could have won. The RNC spent NOTHING on his campaign, my guess they funneled money to the DNC to fight Republican VA senate and house candidates.
The RNC wanted Stewart to lose.
Revenge will come when the DOJ indicts Warner for leaking classified information
I would say only if a tax pain threshold is reached but considering NY and NJ that might never occur.
I used to be in Brat's district (7th VA) and voted for him when he beat the RINO king in waiting Eric the purple Cant-nor. Through redistricting I am now in a different district (1st VA). So the Demoncats restricted my county via gerrymandering, one of the deepest red places youd find anywhere, out of the (7th VA). I NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO RE-ELECT BRAT.
The county I live in went Stewart 70/30 if that tells you anything.
Your comments are spot-on. Fairfax County has more than 1 million residents, and it’s bright blue because it’s filled with over-paid federal workers who have every reason to vote Democrat. Republicans can carry every rural county in the state and if the Dims get a majority in the three largest NoVA counties, they still win.
There’s another factor at work here as well, namely court-ordered redistricting that favors the Democrats. When Congressional district lines were redrawn (by federal judges), the 4th went from a relatively safe GOP district to the Democrats; the second district picked up York County on the Tidewater Peninsula, to go along with the eastern shore, and portions of the southside, stretching all the way to Virginia Beach. It made the district more competitive, and sure enough, GOP incumbent Scott Taylor lost yesterday.
Hate to say it, but Virginia is a lost cause; GOP will probably retain a couple of rural Congressional districts, and remain competitive in the General Assembly for a few more years, but rest assured. The next Democrat redistricting will target even more Republicans, and they will revert to minority status in the legislature in the very near future.
I currently live in the Old Dominion, but as soon as I can retire, the wife and I are decamping for Tennessee. The only thing that would help Virginia is a 20-year federal hiring freeze for every department that isn’t DoD. You would need to retire a couple of generations of federal civil servants who live in Loudon and Fairfax County to even make a dent—and pray they move someone else to collect their fat government pensions.
Good luck getting Jeff Sessions out from under his desk to make that happen...
