Democrat Joe Cunningham is projected win his bid to represent South Carolinas 1st district, defeating a candidate closely aligned with President Trump and shifting a ruby red coastal district into Democratic hands for the first time in decades.
Cunningham, a former ocean engineer turned lawyer, defeated Republican state Rep. Katie Arrington. The seat opened up this year after Arrington toppled Rep. Mark Sanford, an outspoken Trump critic and member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, in the GOP primary.
While Trump carried the Charleston-area district by about 12 points in 2016, Arrington who ran on a pro-Trump platform had failed to pull away from Cunningham in the general election.
Cunningham, 36, raised more money than Arrington and picked up endorsements from a number of Republican mayors in the state. He is opposed to offshore drilling and seismic testing.
I suspect the same thing that happened all over. GOP-e poltical treason and a Democrat candidate that recklessly lied. Probably ran as a "new kind of Democrat, not one of those nasty DC Democrats". He is young and energetic so Female voters, again, voted with their genitalia instead of their brains just like 2006 and 2008.
Now, as in 2006, the interesting thing is how due they KEEP the seat once they go to DC and vote as Nancy Peolosies rubber stamp?
Sanford worked behind the scenes to defeat her with the help of the GOP. The GOPe will tolerate no candidate that primaries a sitting congressperson.
When the postmortem on this election is written slot of sabotage is going to be unearthed.
I’m from a different part of the state, but Arrington was considered a liberal RINO who pretended to be pro-Trump. She was a bad candidate, but Sanford’s neverTrump nonsense over the top, so she won the primary.
Haha. Congratulations, Lindsey Graham! You flipped a seat to blue!
Arrington was a faker and inauthentic. In fact it was so fake how she supported Trump that it seemed very creepy
I live in the Hilton Head area. Sad that Katie didn’t win.
She got an A rating from the NRA. The SC 1 district hugs the coast. Cunningham poured a ton of money into campaign ads. Scare tactics about off shore drilling was the issue that won for him.
Not sure demographics played a role. There has been a large surge of refugees fleeing blue states moving here. I’m one. Many refuges from blue states have commented to me that they are surprised how Republicans fire back to their liberal political comments. I tell them to sit out local elections and let the natives, who have done a very good job keeping SC a low tax, small government state, run the show. We don’t need you to bring your blue state crap here.
Charleston County (1 of 5 counties) put him over the top. We need an electoral college here.
Actually two. Trey Gowdy was replaced by William Timmons(R). Timmons is a full bore "compromiser" and cheap labor express guy endorsed by Graham. Despite the (R) after his name, I see him siding with Pelosi on health care, immigration and the environment.
There are also a lot of people moving to the Myrtle Beach area all the way down to Hilton Head from New York and other northeastern states. They are bringing their liberal leanings along with them. I’m afraid that district 1 will remain in Democrat hands for the next decade at the very least.
Timmons is total scum. An arrogant punk RINO with no business being in Washington. He’ll be brought down in some sort of scandal fairly quickly I expect.
This always amazes me. I moved to North Florida in 2013, and one of the main reasons was finally my vote would count, being from NY. Why the hell anyone would flee the North East and vote for the same type of jackasses that have destroyed that area, makes no sense to me.
Brat lost as well. He of course primaried Cantor.
Actually, Myrtle Beach is now in the 7th Congressional District.
We need an Electoral College in every state. This is getting ridiculous. He won that district. She didn’t. But, when talking about statewide elections for Governors, Senators, AGs, the densely populated urban, liberal, government dependent areas, shouldn’t rule the roost. Take pretty much every state in the country, especially the “Blue” ones, and we all find that its the cities that run the show. The folks in the country pay the price.
“Sanford worked behind the scenes to defeat her with the help of the GOP.”
We have a democrat governor here in Louisiana thanks to the help of the GOP elected officials.
I made the move to Georgia in 1995 and thought the same thing. From what I can tell, and I don’t live/work in Atlanta anymore, there seems to be a bit more self reliance, from folks in the South. The northerners can barely change their own tires. So, they vote for more and more government assistance, because that’s what government is for. God forbid you call a private company to come pick up your trash. The government is supposed to do that.
I know here in PA having served in the state legislature is not a resume enhancement. Voters view all of those guys, D’s and R’s, as nothing but a bunch of crooks.
Thanks, I didn’t know that...
The spending edge Democrats had, in some cases huge, may have been decisive in many close races. Conservatives can’t count on the funding sources that establishment Republicans receive. There’s going to have to be a lot more contributions directly to the campaigns of conservative candidates and not count on the GOP-e PACS. The GOP-e types also got outspent in many races too.
I’m guessing the Dems will have a big spending edge again in 2020. I don’t know what the answer is except for conservatives to contribute more to conservative PACS and directly to campaigns.
