Democrat Joe Cunningham is projected win his bid to represent South Carolinas 1st district, defeating a candidate closely aligned with President Trump and shifting a ruby red coastal district into Democratic hands for the first time in decades.
Cunningham, a former ocean engineer turned lawyer, defeated Republican state Rep. Katie Arrington. The seat opened up this year after Arrington toppled Rep. Mark Sanford, an outspoken Trump critic and member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, in the GOP primary.
While Trump carried the Charleston-area district by about 12 points in 2016, Arrington who ran on a pro-Trump platform had failed to pull away from Cunningham in the general election.
Cunningham, 36, raised more money than Arrington and picked up endorsements from a number of Republican mayors in the state. He is opposed to offshore drilling and seismic testing.
Obviously the fact that she spent a good amount of time in the hospital this summer put her at a huge disadvantage in campaigning and fundraising. I live in Charleston now. Her opponent, Joe Cunningham, ran way more TV ads the last month.
If you knew nothing about Cunningham except what you saw in his TV ads, you'd think he was a conservative. His ads said how his dad read him the Bible when he was a kid, how he is for strong border security, how he would not vote with Nancy Pelosi. No one who thinks border security is a priority would support a Democrat in this election.
My wife and I are part-time residents in Hilton Head. We love it here. And we’re looking to make that full-time residence if SC allows us to declare asylum from the Peoples Republic of Illinois.
Though we were not eligible to vote here, it was sad Katie did not win. I really hope this is not a sign that liberalism is infesting this wonderful state.
BTW, we’re in the Indigo Run plantation.
Indigo Run is a nice plantation. I played the Golden Bear a few times. Nicklaus always puts a tree in front of the tee which I manage to hit. Lots of dog legs and blind shots. Tough course.
I’m in Sun City just before the island. Lots of refugees from Ill here. The property taxes are low in Beaufort county. Overall SC is very tax friendly to retirees. One of the happiest days of my life was when I put deep blue Ct in my rear view.
SC is a very fiscally and socially conservative state. Gun friendly too. I don’t see it ever going blue.
