Cruz is currently up by 200,000 votes...the early results must have been urban areas. This may not even end up being close in the final tally.

Not necessarily. It might have helped down ticket races like TX-7 and TX-32 to flip. Would that have been the case if the Senate were not as close.
It should not be close but IMHO, all the bashing of Cruz during the Presidential election of 16 did not help. There are still people on this sight that they are happy he beat Beno but have to get one more bash in. Check up a few post from yours and you will see what I mean
