Many consider today's midterm election a referendum on President Trump, but one Pulitzer Prize-winning historian says otherwise. "I think it's a collective mirror on us, who we vote as our leaders, where we are going as a country, what are our values," Doris Kearns Goodwin said Tuesday on "CBS This Morning."
CBS News contributor and former "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer agreed.
"President Trump has made this, he wants it to be, a referendum on him. I mean, he thinks most things are a referendum on him. But that is beside the point," Schieffer said. "I think it's a referendum on us."

Lovely couple.
There’s a reason they call it the old media.
Goodwin is a long time lib masquerading as an impartial middle of the roader.
Homely partisan hack.
2016 was already a referendum on the media-controllers.
We won. They lost.
So they doubled down on their never-ending campaign of lies and hatred of America and their hatred of Donald Trump and the millions who support him.
If we win again tonight they will triple down. Someday they will pay a heavier price than just losing an election or two.
“referedum on us”
Well, yeah. That’s kind of what free and fair elections are, Sherlock.
It is a message that there is growing list of voters who don’t need DC-MSM leadership anymore.
Does anyone under 70 watch CBS?
Anyone who cares what those two jackasses think about anything is an idiot.

Obfuscation, not analysis.
Yep
We hate your guts and your stupid party
Funny coming from a plagiarist.
What the MSM doesn’t understand is that this last 60 days has been so over the top that even the middle of the road, occasional viewer see them for what they are. Other than with the hard core leftist base, they have no credibility left. These non political individuals have now been red pilled regarding media and just like when it happened to you and me that trust in the media is never coming back.
Basically, he’s saying he and the elite media will judge the electorate based on the outcome of the election. If we pick Democrats, we have evolved to a more kind, open-minded, caring country. If we select Republicans, then Americans are selfish, racist, greedy and hateful.
Very well put, and speaks to the fact that the media is more hateful and shrill than ever. I’m old enough to remember their raw hatred of Agnew, then Nixon (just barely old enough to remember those), then Reagan, then Quayle, then Newt, then Chimpy McBusHitler....
They are so desperate to sway people in their (Democrat) direction, but their methods might actually be sending people the opposite way.
Hyper-partisan bias on the part of the “mainstream” media isn’t anything a bit new. But their pure drooling vitriol at all times is a little new, and the violence they are attempting to incite (and already HAVE incited) will boomerang on them someday. Possibly very soon.
Fraudulent elitists. They are convinced the lies they tell themselves are true. Trump has NEVER claimed this is about himself. He says over and over it is about the people of this country. He has given us hope where there was none. He has returned the government to the people. Stuck on themselves elitists like Schieffer cannot see the truth because they are blinded by their own beliefs. They will learn, in a few hours.
I thought they we actually saying “us” as in media (which would have been refreshing)...but, no, it was just another swipe at We the People.
If the Repubs pull this out, it will absolutely be a referendum on the media.
A referendum on Donald Trump? Okay.
Let’s remember that Barak Obama’s Democrats lost 63 House seats during his first mid-term election in 2010.
And that Bill Clinton’s Democrats lost 54 House seats, and Ronald Reagan’s Republicans lost 26 House seats, respectively, during their first midterm elections.
Any fewer Republican losses today should be considered a victory for Donald Trump.
