You did the right thing. Some people are small brained and big mouthed. They best learn from being met by brute strength , like a feral life form.
In hindsight I probably could have saved everyone a lot of grief by hitting him the first time, rather than letting it drag in out 9 months and then hitting him with all that pent-up frustration all at once.
