As a free speech activist, I am somewhat concerned with definitions in all of this.

Election “meddling” means what, exactly? Broadcasting opinions designed to influence outcomes? How is that to be construed as meddling?

Are you meddling in Canadian elections when you type words to a Canadian political forum such as “soy boy Justin T” or is that just one person’s opinion as part of a larger discussion (in which a thousand Canadians post, “soy boy Juthtin T” because we’re more aware of the lisp.)

So if some Russian internet blogger, even if Putin may be hovering over his shoulder with a big old grin, types in nasty comments about HRC or DJT or anyone else, so what? If we are not predisposed to accept those comments, will they not just blast on by us like all the other white noise in our daily internet experience?

I said I liked Trump’s chances in October 2016, will the Congress come after me now? I don’t really get where the boundary between free speech and espionage lies in all of this. People naturally have opinions about the world around them, expecting each country to put a fence up to keep outside opinions from reaching the citizens is not only impractical, it violates every principle of free speech.

And so what if there is an objective behind the commentary? It would be pointless to comment on anything without an objective.
