Russia said to be ‘considering’ new military base in Cuba but would Putin risk provoking Trump?
Great Power War ^ | 11/1/18 | Jon E. Dougherty

A top-ranking Russian military officer said Moscow was considering establishing a new military base in Cuba even as the Cold War-era allies were planning a high-level meeting in the coming days, Newsweek reported.

Colonel General Vladimir Shamanov, chairman of the Russian lower house of parliament’s defense committee and a former airborne commander, also became the latest Russian official to warn of consequences if the Trump administration quits the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, as the president has warned, in response to intelligence that Moscow has been in violation of the agreement for years.

The crazier Trump acts the less anybody will try ANYTHING. I’m okay with Trump’s negotiating style. It’s poker. It’s Rambo. It’s the unhinged bad guy in a Bond movie talking softly.

If Trump manages to stop the invading horde before they get in, it will be the last time anybody even tries that trick. Next, he needs to either arrest or arrange bad things to happen to the financiers and the organizers. That too will stop much of the shenanigans the baddies try.

Our military forces are not what they used to be. Things have changed. Russian military bases in Cuba are only another Russian weakness.

I would guess it would never have the kind of combat power that our military couldn’t deal with. But it could cause a lot of annoying mischief.
A base in Cuba would mainly be placed there to make the point that they don’t like our bases right on their border.

Oh well, lots of money to be made in this new cold war.

”Our military forces are not what they used to be. Things have changed. Russian military bases in Cuba are only another Russian weakness.”

Our conventional forces are still vastly superior to Russia’s. Obama weakened our military for sure, but Russia’s military fell off a cliff. Just recall the recent sailing of their broken-down carrier battle group into the Mediterranean. They’re lucky the carrier didn’t sink along the way.

It’s Russia’s nuclear forces, which they continue to modernize, that makes them a threat.

OK, let’s suppose that the Russians establish a base in Cuba. No missiles there, just a generic base. What could/should Trump do about it?

I’d say not much. You could tighten up travel and trade restrictions with Cuba, to be sure. But a Kennedy-style naval blockade? I would hope not.

So they do want all the old sanctions reinstated then?
OK.

We missed our chance in taking Cuba in the 1960s.

Russia's putting nukes there was tantamount to a declaration of war.

We should have attacked then, captured all the Russian nuke stuff, and occupied Cuba.

The Cold War would have effectively ended then.

Collapse of the Soviet Union would have occurred sooner.

Probably would have reduced the likelihood of Viet Nam and even the worldwide muslim thing (which started in Iran because of another weak POTUS) being anything near what they turned out to be.

JFK the loser let it all happen. Other Rats like Johnson, Carter, and Clinton helped make these things the clusters that they are.

Wasn’t there a report by an embedded Fox reporter last week that anecdotal evidence showed that some 30 percent of woman and girls in the “Caravan” had been raped during the trek northward?

Russia's Vladimir Shamanov.......the guy likes to throw his 'weight' around....regarding our being in Syria he grumbled.....“We won’t let the Americans hammer nails on someone else’s anvil.” ........now he wants Russia to hang out in Cuba.

According to some of the histories I have read, there were tactical nukes already in place there, and the authorization to use them was in the hands of the top Russian officer on-scene.

A full-scale American invasion would likely ended up VERY badly, ITKWIM.
