Cold War Coming Back? Russia ‘Assessing’ Military Base in Cuba [TR]

Full title: Cold War Coming Back? Russia ‘Assessing’ Military Base in Cuba as U.S. Set to Leave Nuclear Missile Deal

A senior Russian official said Wednesday that his country was seriously considering establishing a military base in Cuba, just as the two Cold War–era allies were set to meet for high-level talks and the United States mulled quitting a nuclear missile deal.

Colonel General Vladimir Shamanov, head of the Russian lower house of parliament's defense committee and a former airborne troops commander, became the latest Moscow figure to warn of the historic consequences of the U.S. leaving the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. The U.S. and Russia have accused one another of violating the agreement, but now President Donald Trump has announced his intention to end it, paving the way for new nuclear and conventional weapons systems at a time of heightened tensions.

"In order to strengthen our military presence in Cuba, we need at least the consent of the Cuban government. After all, this question is more political than military, and today, it’s probably premature to talk about any specific measures in response to a possible U.S. withdrawal from INF," Shamanov told the Interfax news agency.

Having a strong military is expensive.

Does Russian have the money to actually be a threat? Didn’t their single Air Craft Carrier sink while in dry dock?

Even maintaining Nuclear weapons is an expensive proposition. Just “building” a nuclear bomb is not the end of it. They need constant maintenance. Expensive.

Setting up a base in Cuba, why? To threaten the US? Well they would get one shot and then be wiped out. Does Cuba really want to go down that road again. President Trump has had a habit of ending treaties that are bad for the US. At the end of the last Cuba Missile crisis part of the deal was to leave Cuba alone. If the Russian moved back in and started building bases then that puts the end of any treaty.

And so it goes.

The old Soviet Union collapse because it could not spend as much on defense as the US. Does a smaller Russia have a better economy then the entire Soviet Empire. If so, go for it. See you at the check out stand when the bill comes due.

As usual this is just my simple opinion and as always I may be wrong or misinformed

Heh. Cuba under the microscope on one side, Russia’s fake weapons and bases around Moscow on the other side,... Looks like fun in the near future. Anyone interested in Siberian real estate?

The dry dock sank and a crane fell on it.

Placing bets whether Kuznetsov could even be towed to Bangladesh for scrapping...

I once read that a threat is not what an enemy wants to do but what they are capable of doing. The Russian’s capabilities have be lowered over the years,

I think it would be an improvement.

” ... a new arms race is on, he says, and Russia must not give up.”

So, Gorby, how did the last arms race with the US turn out for you?
