“I, Claudius” and “Claudius the God” by Robert Graves. I rate these the finest historical novels I’ve ever read.

The Hornblower series, by C. S. Forester.
Anything by Ernest K. Gann
Anything by Adm. Danial V. Gallery

Historical fiction is not a field I have read much in. I love History and can give you ideas there.

For H.f. “All the Kings Men” by Robert Penn Warren is a great one. “Burr” by Gore Vidal; “Ragtime” E.L. Doctrow; “The Conqueror” Gertrude Atherton (this is an old book and contains more history than fiction. But Hamilton’s life reads more like fiction than fiction itself.)
