As for what do about it...well...that's a sticky wicket.

And that is what all of you non-Catholics on this thread need to understand. As lay people there is damned little we can do about it, other than stop giving them money and/or walk away.

The Catholic Church is a dictatorship. There is no Board of Elders made up of lay people with the power to fire offending clergy. NOBODY is going to make Francis go. There is no real mechanism to do that. The College of Cardinals elected him, and they are answerable to no one (except the Almighty ultimately). Since that time Francis has appointed even more supporters to its ranks, so the thought that they are going to do anything about him is a pipedream.
