Trump to withdraw from postal treaty that has let China ship cheaply to U.S.

President Donald Trump plans to withdraw from a postal treaty that has allowed Chinese companies to ship small packages to the U.S. at a steeply discounted rate...

~SNIP~

Under the Universal Postal Union treaty, China and other developing countries have since 1969 been assessed lower rates than wealthier nations. The Times says the decision to withdraw was made at the urging of Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro. The National Association of Manufacturers said Trump deserved credit for his focus on eliminating what it called "the anti-U.S. manufacturer subsidy China receives from the U.S. Postal Service."

This just helped zillions of retailers in the US who have to compete with china sellers who can ship it here for 30 cents (or free because the china government was subsidizing this).

Big boom to internet retailers big and small. eBay sellers no longer have to compete with 99 cent with free shipping from China, Large retailers don’t have to compete with counterfeits direct from China on Alibaba or wherever.

Great news!

Just when I thought I could not love President Trump anymore!

I know a LOT of Ebay and Amazon sellers here and here’s how I saw it.

China offers brand name products at dirt cheap prices HANDS DOWN. Obviously, buyers will buy eventually buy from them. BUT, the time it takes to ship and arrive most times takes MORE than 2 weeks, sometimes months.

PLUS, the E=PACKET delivery with USPS gives a disadvantage to US SELLERS who pay from their own pockets.

The beef from Ebay and Amazon sellers is that they are OK with the competition. HOWEVER, dont subsidize the competition from American taxpayer’s money that is used against the same American sellers on Ebay and Amazon.

Now I know how all those really cheap minor computer items get here. I have ordered them on ebay. Could be as simple as an SATA to USB cable to plug an SATA drive into my laptop or desktop. Or reliable earbuds.... bought 10 for 10 dollars from China. Had good ebay feedback and sales.

Long, long overdue.

More promises kept.

The Republican party could learn a lot from this. But it won’t.

Trump ditches 144-year-old postal pact that boosts Chinese retailers
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/trump-ditches-144-year-old-postal-pact-that-boosts-chinese-retailers/2018/10/17/88aefea6-d234-11e8-8c22-fa2ef74bd6d6_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.1c9213cf3952

By Danielle Paquette October 17 at 4:01 PM
President Trump moved Wednesday to withdraw from a 144-year-old international postal agreement that enables businesses in China to mail small packages to the United States at a hefty discount, an arrangement government officials said boosts foreign competitors and costs the U.S. Postal Service roughly $170 million per year.

Trump’s notice to exit from the Universal Postal Union (UPU) treaty comes as the White House cranks up the pressure on Beijing to drop what it calls predatory commercial practices, including swiping trade secrets from American companies operating in China.

“This has been a long-standing, long-festering problem,” said Robert Taub, chairman of the Postal Regulatory Commission, an independent federal agency.

[Trump’s nasty fight with China’s middle class could extend the trade war]

The administration framed the departure as separate from the trade war in which Trump has impod tariffs on roughly half of Chinese goods entering the United States.

Dropping out of the postal treaty, first ratified in 1874, is expected to exacerbate tensions with China, but the Postal Service and business groups applauded the action Wednesday.

“The current system has led to the United States subsidizing the imports of small packages from other countries,” said Jeff Adams, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service.

Under the treaty, which sets fees that national carriers in 192 countries charge for mail delivery, the U.S. Postal Service bills China-based companies at a sharply discounted rate for parcels that weigh less than 4.4 pounds.

Trump administration officials say the leg up, granted under a 1969 provision, was intended to promote growth in poor countries. But it remained in place after China became an e-commerce powerhouse.

The deal has allowed the country to flood the United States with cheap goods at shipping discounts of up to 70 percent, putting American companies at a disadvantage and straining the U.S. mail system while fueling growth abroad, Taub said.

Of course the E-Packet scam was one way. The Chicoms could get the dirt cheap rate to ship to the US but US sellers shipped at regular air mail rates to China. Not going to happen now. LOL. It was a typical globalist free traitor scam that flipped the bird at Main Street USA.

The e-pack scam was just terrible. I was at the PO one day and a woman was trying to return a dress that had been shipped by the chicoms. Of course it was $30 or something air mail and she didn’t want to pay that much. The Chinese know this. They ship garbage over knowing buyers will never bother to return it.

And it’s amazing how a common sense decision like this takes TWO YEARS to get done. POTUS should have been able to do this on Day 1 in the White House.

Yes. This will clear out all the horrible Chinese sellers on Amazon and help American sellers.

Great Job Prez Trump!!!!

Wow.
This man is stunningly good at his job.

I’ve bought things from China for under a dollar including shipping. I couldn’t ship them to my next door neighbor for less than six dollars.

This is going to literally reshape some Chinese shipping ports.

I’m starting to dread 2024.
