10 ways to combat global warming
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | October 17, 2018 | by Tara Bahrampour

A United Nations. climate change report this month declared the world to be in danger of losing the battle against global warming if extreme measures are not adopted in the next decade.

But you can make a difference in global warming at home and in your community - and save yourself money in the process.

1. Commute like a European - Traditional cars burn fossil fuels, causing air pollution and contributing to smog, acid rain and global warming. Biking, walking or taking public transit are the best alternatives.

2. When you do drive, plug in - If we can replace older, fossil-fuel cars with cars using renewably generated, zero-carbon electricity, we will address a significant part of the climate challenge.

3. Follow the sun - Choose a utility company that generates at least 50 percent of its power from solar or wind. Better yet, install solar panels on your house.

4. Caulk those cracks - Sealing air leaks around doors and windows cuts down on the use of heating and air conditioning, reducing energy consumption.

5. Update your appliances.

6. Stay cool in the laundry room - Wash with cold or cool water and drying on low or on an energy-efficient setting.

7. Eat like a horse, go veggie - If every American swapped one meat meal a week for an all-vegetarian meal, it would cut emissions.

8. Light the way to savings - Light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs last for years and use a fraction of the energy.

9. Lawns are so 20th century - In the place of that square of grass, give your yard over to native plants.

10. Take it on the road - Advocate for your city or state to use native plants on public land.

Stopped reading after #1. Refusing to take into account the mileage differences and the cultural differences, destroys what little credibility there was.

Leave the Hemi at idle with a suitably rich fuel-air mix, putting plenty of unburned hydrocarbons in the air....

Then when you gun it up, a beautiful cloud of black soot shoots out the exhaust stack.

The high concentration of particulate matter in the atmosphere will result in global COOLING.

Win-win.

Ok...and if all 6+ billion people in the world adopt all of these habits...then what? How will we know we succeeded? Will hurricanes go away? famine? floods? What are the success metrics here?

I believe there are two problems the USA faces from weather hurricanes and tornadoes. Look at the genesis of both of and these and see if they can be lessened. Hurricanes are out of Africa and tornadoes I’m clueless. Tornadoes need an early warning system with a grid that spells out where they are spawning. Put the smartest people in a room and don’t let them out until the have sound scientific answers.

I think your last 3 steps are over-kill.

We should trim your list down to the first 7.

1. Commute like a European - Not going to happen. Plus I only drive 22 miles round trip a day.

2. When you do drive, plug in -Nope, need a 4WD pickup truck, on my 2rd Tacoma

3. Follow the sun - One choice Eversource. Not applicable

4. Caulk those cracks - Done. Also, people should add as much insulation to their home.

5. Update your appliances. Done. Whirpool French Door fridge(made in Iowa) Kitchenaid dishwasher(also made in Iowa) Fisher-Paykel(made in New Zeeland) top load high efficiency washer. I have a septic and leach field. I am concerned how much soapy sulfate(bad for leach field) water goes into that field.

6. Stay cool in the laundry room - I do what cleans the clothes

7. Eat like a horse, go veggie - It seems to work for Tom Brady(TB12) but I love a good Rib eye, lamb chops, ribs, etc. I’ll still eat my broccoli, right next to the animal meat.

8. Light the way to savings - Done, every time I need to change a bulb. Also, put in programmable thermostats.

9. Lawns are so 20th century - I like my Kentucky Blue Grass, but the clover seems to be taking over. So, I am 50/0 on this one.

10. Take it on the road - Eastern White Pine trees, maple tress, birch trees, etc grow like weeds around here. I am not sure where this Sumac comes from. Time to break out the Round UP!

1. Commute like a European Nope, I like my diesel truck. It totally pisses off the liberals. Their heads explode when they see a women driving it.

2. When you do drive, plug in - Nope, see the answer to #1.

3. Follow the sun - I have solar on my house.

4. Caulk those cracks - Sealing air leaks around doors and windows cuts down on the use of heating and air conditioning, reducing energy consumption. okay.

5. Update your appliances. Nope. We not only have solar electricity we also have a solar water heating system. Plus I use a solar clothes dryer when it isn’t raining, AKA a clothesline.

6. Stay cool in the laundry room - Wash with cold or cool water and drying on low or on an energy-efficient setting. See answer # 5.

7. Eat like a horse, go veggie - I am not a horse.

8. Light the way to savings - Light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs last for years and use a fraction of the energy. they are usually a POS made in China, Wish that we could go back to the original ones that lasted for years.

9. Lawns are so 20th century - In the place of that square of grass, give your yard over to native plants. No

10. Take it on the road - Advocate for your city or state to use native plants on public land. There is little to no land that is within my city that is available for public lands. We are leaving the state of confusion anyway, so no vested interest either way. My husband likes to say that we are environmentalists. We like to control our environment by using the AC or the heater.

11. Reduce CO2 emissions by stop breathing.

If all Bolshies would do this, what a wonderful world this would be, besides, it would reduce CO2 by 55%.

The old Maytags, GEs , washers and dryers lasted forever. However, the new Energy Star appliances use much less electricity and are quieter.

For example, I replaced my 1980’s Hotpoint side by side fridge with a bigger French door Whirlpool and my electric bill went down $20/month. Do not buy the ice maker through the door models. They are the #1 thing that fails on fridges.

I replaced the old Whirpool Dishwasher with a new Kitchenaid. The old Whirpool we used to program to run at night because it was so loud you could not hear the TV in the next room. The new Kitchenaid you can not hear it running if you are standing next to it.

I replaced the washer with a Fisher Paykel when the Maytag died after 25 years. This is a top load direct drive motor with no belts. When it goes into the spin cycle it sounds like a jet engine. The clothes come out slightly damp. This reduces drying time($). Also, it uses less water. This is a concern to me because I am on a well and septic/leach field. The sulfate soaps are what causes a leach field to eventually fail. Leach fields cost about $12K to replace around here.

However, when the 30 year old GE dryer finally died I bought a another old Maytag dryer from a friend that just bought new ones. I took the back off and cleaned out the lint with my shop vac. I sanded and repainted the top. It looks brand new. It will probably last another 20 years.

Flakes have been producing these insipid lists ever since the first Earth Day in 1970. I gues it makes them feel virtuous. Pathetic.
