Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) leads West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey by a small margin, according to a poll released Tuesday.
Sen. Manchin leads Morrisey by four points49 to 45 percentin the heated West Virginia race. Thirty-six percent of West Virginia voters said they will definitely vote for Manchin, 11 percent will probably vote for the West Virginia Democrat, and two percent are leaning towards voting for him.
In contrast, 36 percent said they will definitely vote for Morrisey, eight percent will probably vote for the AG, and one percent lean towards voting for the West Virginia Republican. Three percent of West Virginia voters remain undecided.
An overwhelming number of West Virginia voters support President Donald Trump, and Manchin faces a tough re-election campaign in a state Trump won by more than 42 points in the 2016 presidential election.
Sixty-two percent of West Virginians approve of Trumps job performance. Among those voters, 55 percent strongly approve of the president, and eight percent somewhat approve of him. Only 35 percent disapprove of Trumps job performance, with four percent somewhat disapproving, and 30 percent strongly approving.
This newest poll shows a tight race between Manchin and Morrisey. A survey released last week found that Manchin and Morrisey have struck a virtual dead heat. The poll showed that Manchins favorability hit a new low: 45 percent of voters have a favorable opinion of Manchin, while 50 percent of voters have an unfavorable view of the incumbent Democrat.
Another poll from Morning Consult found that Manchin was one of the top ten least popular senators.
Morrisey has attacked Manchin for portraying himself as a conservative lawmaker in West Virginia and then cozying up with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and other leftist politicians in Washington, DC.

Margin of error, perhaps. Still, I’d like to see three Trump rallies in different sections of that state. Manchin and Heitkamp may be the least malignant of their party, but they are still the most vulnerable. It would be nice to take them down.
NOT GOOD!
Wake up West Virginians!! Pelosi pnly LET him vote for Kavanaugh as the vote was Already decided!
If his vote COULD have blocked Kavanaugh,
he would have voted “NO”
Dimms have cut back on his funding.
Manchin was a moderately decent Governor, during the time that WV was transitioning from 'Rat infested hellhole to a state in which ZERO counties voted for Hildebeeste.
Manchin ran in 2010 and again in 2012 as a "conservative", with the ENDORSEMENT of the NRA.
He lied.
Which brings us to today. We'll see how many Mountaineers have seen through his lies.
Check out the methodology.
sample is D plus 6 i think it’s going R
I’m guessing we will not see President Trump back in West Virginia before the vote.
I'm surprised that Morrissey isn't walking away with this. If this is who Trump wants, WV ought to come through for him.
Wording of the poll makes it garbage.
We need commercials with Trump as the spokesman for this one. TV commercials and radio. Help!
Manchin was ALWAYS the most likely red state D to survive.. but I believed he would lose even before the Kavanaugh fiasco... Even with the YES vote I doubt he will survive....
But the more I see of the GOP guy... the more I think Manchin may eek it out. Morrissey if he wins better get down on his knees and thank GOD he ran during this cycle, because when put side by side, Manchin completely outshines him on every level.
One thing for certain, if Manchin goes down, absolutely NO red state Democrat will win their Senate race... Period.
Manchin is a slimy scumbag DINO as evidenced by the Kav confirmation.
However, Patrick Morrissey is a horrible candidate.
does Trump have the stamina to fit one more visit in to WV for Morrissey?
Manchin is a solid Politician, and he read the tea leaves RE Trump long long ago... Morrissey on the other hand, really is just riding the anti D wave, because he is truly not ready for prime time.. and the more I see of him the weaker he looks.
With that said though, the tide is so Strong against the D’s right now, even with a pathetically weak Morrissey as the Candidate the GOP should win... the Tide is just that strong against the Dems.
HOWEVER, Manchin is indeed the strongest of the Red state D’s... If any are going to survive he would be the most likely...
One thing is for certain however, if Manchin goes down, there isn’t a single red state D senator who will survive.
I think he will go down, I think the tide is just too strong against him... but I will be honest the more I see of Morrissey the more I think Manchin may find a way to eek it out. Morrissey truly is weak as hell... Especially when you compare him to Manchin.
Only every sixth year. And then only if his vote is not needed by the Democrat party.
Agreed, a strong Candidate and this would be a clear slam dunk for the GOP.. but Morrissey, the more I see of him, the more I think Manchin may be able to eek it out.
Manchin is CLEARLY, by leaps and bounds the better politician.
Morrissey is just riding the red tide, and I think the red tide is so strong he should win.. but God, is he weak.
Manchin was always the MOST LIKELY of the red state D’s to survive.. if he goes down, especially to a schlub like Morrissey, then there is NO WAY any other Red State D survives...
And I'm guessing that's because President Trump struck a deal with him that he (Trump) wouldn't come back into WV if Manchin (Mancini) voted for Kavanaugh.
Manchin is a VERY adept politician... and is without question the STRONGEST of the red state Dems... He was always the MOST likely of the lot to survive....
If Machin goes down in WV... and I believe he will, not because Morrissey is any good... gawd he is awful, just an incompetent retail politician... the more I see of him the weaker he looks... however if Manchin goes down, it will purely be on the back of the anti D wave... and if its strong enough to take out Manchin... there isn’t a single Red State D Senator that will survive.
Though I have to be honest, the more and more I see of Morrissey, the more I think Manchin may find a way to eek it out... God where did the WV GOP find this guy?
No deal was Struck for Kavanaughs vote... Manchin was ALWAYS going to vote yes, as long as the GOP hit 50 on their own...
No dem was going to be the deciding vote, but Manchin was ALWAYS a yes, as long as the GOP hit 50 on their own... There was no deal to strike here... Manchin knew he was dead with a no vote his State supported Kavanaugh by 80%.... He knew any shot at re-election was done if he voted no... So if the R’s didn’t have 50 he would vote no and take the golden parachute.. but as long as they got 50, he was a yes, and everyone knew it... so there was no deal to strike for his vote.
Sadly Morrissey is just a gawd awful candidate... horrible retail politician, particularly compared with Manchin. If Morrissey does win this it will PURELY be on the back of Anti D sentiment...
West Virginians deserve what they vote for.
