Every time Trump says something particularly inflammatory, he does it to control the media:

1. To change their focus

2. To take oxygen from an opponent's messaging so it happens in an empty room

3. To take the light and heat off something happening behind the scenes that needs quiet to resolve

4. To split his opponent's energy into different areas and dissipate it with no impact.

He is a zen master. It is purposeful. Ask his opponents.
