Support from family and community appear to shield Latinos from rising suicide rates.
... experience illustrates a suicide paradox, experts say. Even though Latinos face economic disadvantages and other stress in their lives, their suicide rate is about one-third that of non-Hispanic whites, both in Texas and nationally.
Experts attribute the relatively low suicide rate among Latinos to the cultures strong family and community support systems, which appear to provide some degree of protection.
In Texas, the suicide rate among non-Hispanic whites has been steadily increasing during the past 16 years, from 13.4 deaths per 100,000 residents in 2000 to 19.2 deaths per 100,000 in 2016. Meanwhile, the rate has remained largely unchanged among Hispanics, with 6.7 suicides per 100,000 residents in 2016 the same as the national rate.
Latinos face obstacles that can affect their health and well-being: They earn less than non-Hispanic whites, and are more likely to lack health insurance coverage. In 2017, 16.1 percent of Hispanics were uninsured compared with 6.3 percent of non-Hispanic whites, hampering access to mental health care and other treatment. In addition, Latino immigrants contend with the challenges of moving to a new country, sometimes after leaving violence and other traumatic conditions at home.
But the practice of colectivismo, the building of a latticework of relationships through extended family, work colleagues and friends, is prevalent in the Latino community and can help provide an emotional safety net, said Luis Garcia, who has developed suicide prevention programs for Latino youth in California. Even activities such as regular church picnics or salsa dancing can help, said Garcia, vice president of cultural diversity at Arcadia, Calif.-based Pacific Clinics.
Latinos or Hispanics have a preference to work in groups, Garcia said. Its something that, believe me, we practice on a daily basis.

Paradox... Hispanics, especially those of Mexican ancestry, have the lowest infant mortality rate, the lowest maternal mortality rate, the lowest suicide rate, and the longest longevity rate ... better than whites, whose rate is better than Asians ... whose rate is better than Blacks ... whose rate is better than Native Americans.
Paradox ... Hispanics, especially Mexicans, have the highest rate of uninsured. How can the left say uninsured is a health crisis when the group with the highest uninsured rate is the healthiest?
Paradox ... Hispanics, especially those of Mexican ancestry, have the highest rate of eligibility for Medicaid and CHIPS and do not go on the dole. That is because so many of them are poor. How can expansion of Medicaid improve health when the group that potentially would be the largest group for expansion is healthier than those on Medicaid?
Paradox ... How is it the Moms and babies on Medicaid have the worst rate of infant and maternal mortality. Is not the lesson that Medicaid kills?
Paradox ... Why do those calling for expansion of Medicaid not see the facts?
Just look at the homeless walking the streets. They’re all black and/or white. No hispanics/asians. Someone here-probably the author-is an idiot.
Okay. I can explain it. First most of them are overwhelmingly Catholic, even if not practicing they have been told all their life they go to hell for committing suicide. Two, for the broke people who experience all the stress, if they lose everything they walk outside and find a new old sofa by the dumpster, find another cheap apartment to move into, Etc and rebuild their life in a day. When you don’t have much, it doesn’t drive you to suicide when you lose it.
They have a very high rate of being practicing Catholics.
Very strong family structure.
Very tough emotionally, very durable, they are excellent Marines.
SUICIDE IS PAINLESS

Hey, when your working your ass off to survive, you don’t have time to think of offing yourself.
They’ve had a low suicide rate for decades. Suicide tend to be a function of outcomes over expectations. Whites have higher suicide rates than blacks. Men have higher suicide rates than woman. in general, the higher the income group, the higher the suicide rate.
The nuclear family is strongest in the Latino community. At least it seems that way to me.
Very strong family structure.
Complete fallacy. I know plenty that had wives here and wives back in their home country.
Let’s just keep this between ourselves...the secret is Tacos!
Exactly my point.
We are talking about the reduced suicide rate not the morality of their family structure.
Sensational Headline.
Statistically insignificant data.
White suicide rate - 0.02%
Hispanic suicide rate - 0.007%
Bottom Line....
Suicide is rare - for EVERY ethnic group.
Re: Very strong family structure
In California, Hispanics have a higher “out of wedlock” birth rate than Black people.
