I’m 1/32 Meskwaki, and I didn’t claim native American status to reach minority status.
I’m 38% Yaqui Indian and 28% Iberian (Spanish)—typical for Mexican immigrants from the state if Chihuahua. I have never done anything to bring special attention to my ancestry in school and at work.
When I was a college student in the 70’s at AZ State, the only scholarships available for me was the Regent’s academic scholarship. I graduated in the top 5 percent of my high school class so I got free tuition. But I had to keep my GPA above 3.5 every semester or I would lose my scholarship permanently. I kept my scholarship, graduated Summa Cum Laude.
