This is what academia is becoming. Unless you are fully supportive of this crud you are not welcome.
This b.s. was already starting to become a nightmare in academia 25 yrs ago. I worked for a year in a university office where I was stuck in a cesspool (figuratively) surrounded by 2 lesbians and a gay man who were, together and separately, the biggest a-holes I have ever known anywhere. Nothing could be done about them, they were the “protected” class even then. I got out of there, but I pity anyone who has to work in that sort of PC b.s. environment. Heteronormative culture, indeed. Normality is under siege!!!
When they started diversity training us at work I speculated on how long before they switched from tolerance to “you must promote.”. The answer is, apparently, thirteen years.
