I think Penn is wrong. Generally, elections have traditionally been about turning out your voters. Few politicians alter the composition of the coalitions that elect them. Some are better at motivating their base than others, and some have a little more appeal than others into the mushy middle.
But politics are for more politicized today than they have been in a long time. A real middle is shrinking. Some folks claim to be “independent,” but most people lean left or right.
And in these times of extreme polarization, moderating your message, or your tone, isn’t going to appeal to your base.
I’m not going to start to vote for pro-abort leftist scum because their candidate comes out against violent fascist leftist scum antifa. But some bernietrash may stay home if the pro-abort scum seems too conciliatory to folks who are not violent leftist fascist scum.
