From what I’ve read, RE Lee was greatly troubled when deciding on which side to fight for.

Lincoln did offer Lee command of the entire Union Army at the very beginning of the war.

I’ve read Lee is the only General throughout history that was offered full command of both sides of an opposing force.

That’s true. He was an honorable man and took that fork in the road. He could have had any position he wanted in the Union Army.

"RE Lee was greatly troubled"

Lee was in San Antonio when Ft Sumter fell. He was summoned to Washington (DC) but resigned his commission instead. He would not fight against his state of Virginia.
