ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. - A Rochester Hills man seen on video firing a gun at a teenager who was lost and looking for directions was found guilty by a jury Friday on two counts.
Jeffrey Zeigler was charged with assault with intent to murder and felony firearms violations. The jury found him guilty of the lesser charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and possession of a firearm in commission of a felony.
The 14-year-old boy said he got lost while walking to school April 12 and was looking for directions. He knocked on the door to a home in the 2200 block of South Christian Hills Drive. The homeowner told police he came out with a shotgun because he believed his home was being broken into.
Deputies responded to the home about 8:20 a.m. that morning after the man's wife said someone was trying to break into her home.
"The caller reported that a black male was trying to break into her house and her husband chased after him into the yard. Upon deputies' arrival, it was determined that the husband chased after the male with a 12 gauge shotgun and fired a round toward the fleeing male. No injuries were reported," reads a statement from the Sheriff's Office.

“That’s why it’s the direct responsibility of the cops to investigate all the evidence.”
I would not advise anyone charged with a crime to rely on a the police to exonerate them.
I would strongly suggest that one leave that up to their attorney.
Not even the perp says that the kid was breaking into the house.
agreed
yes
No one said it's up to the police to exonerate anyone because it's not. But it is up to the police to investigate all the evidence regardless. Especially what appears to be real obvious evidence. If this is the actual video used as evidence in court, I'd be seeking an appeal and another trial.
hmmmmmmmmm ...it’s been awhile but I NEVER got “lost” walking to school... .?????
I also would expect something VERY BAD to happen to me for firing a shotgun at a 14 year old kid, or anybody, that was running away from me... ..
mans a dumbass!
But the door knocker himself said the homeowners wife who came down the stairs asked him why he was breaking into their home.
Agree, I’m not buying he was lost either. If he were 10 years old maybe. But 14? I was riding my bicycle 20 miles from home at that age.
After the fact, the perp said he and the wife were mistaken, and it does not seem that the perp, while on the stand, said that the kid attempted to break into the house.
It’s a bad shoot and the perp was convicted.
I could be a bad shoot as I mentioned in my original post. But the fact remains, if this is the actual video evidence then there is something going on with the most critical piece of evidence. Hard to believe, in fact I find it flat out bizarre no one else in the trial mentioned it.
Maybe the actual video evidence was complete. Who knows.
I believe you are mistaken.
Most burglars knock, repeatedly, because they want to be sure no one is home.
Even if the kid knocked on the door to find out if anybody was home he was walking away. How does that justify walking out and shooting at him as he was walking away?
But that’s not what happened. And no one here said in that scenario it would be justified.
They want to know if someone is home.
If someone answers you say you were lost and you need directions.
trayvon was just walking home with skittes and watermelon soda.
I will tell you how he didn’t know his way to school. Because he had his face in his phone or a book every time he got on the bus. I really hate to say, it but my second child had one or the other literally every time we got in the car. Thankfully mostly a book. But I didn’t realize how bad it was until time came for the child to get their drivers license and literally had no clue how to get anywhere.
So, the kid had his backpack on but no cell phone? Something doesn’t add up.
“Is he retarded?”
I guess it’s possible he has a disability of some kind.
Anyone who carries that doesn't carry a USCCA card too is asking for a prison cell.
A lot of those bus routes are very long.
Especially if they are bringing you away from where you belong to where you dont.
Bad, bad shoot. The shooter is damn lucky nobody got hurt.
