A New York man has been charged with building a 200-pound bomb he allegedly planned to detonate on Washington's National Mall on Election Day.
Paul Rosenfeld, 56, appeared in federal court on Wednesday after law enforcement agents found an explosive device in his basement on Tuesday, according to a news release from the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.
Rosenfeld was pulled over while driving, and in an interview with law enforcement agents, he admitted to purchasing black powder online, transporting it to his house in New York from New Jersey and constructing an explosive device in his basement, the news release said. He also said he has previously built smaller explosives to test the devices, according to the release.
A series of letters and text messages sent during August and September also show Rosenfeld intended to detonate the device as a way to bring attention to a political ideology called "sortition," according to the news release, which it describes as a "theory that advocates the random selection of government officials."
It was not immediately clear if Rosenfeld is being represented by an attorney.
"As alleged in the complaint, Paul M. Rosenfeld planned to detonate a large explosive to kill himself and draw attention to his radical political beliefs. Had he been successful, Rosenfeld's alleged plot could have claimed the lives of innocent bystanders and caused untold destruction," US Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a statement.

“It takes more courage to be a conservative in those areas than anywhere else.”
This is correct. The unfortunate part of this statement is that it’s all relative.
NJ will vote along right/left lines but the right is hardly principled.
The people .. every single one of them .. that I have met will not stand up for these principles because of the chances of being arrested in NJ. Buy a box of Hollowpoints if you think you’re courageous.
I’m from Connecticut. This is a great example of the NE “but conservative”. I used to think I was brave hanging out there but I was merely falling in line with the rest of my well disciplined gun-owning brethren. The truth is that I still hid. I still complied. I stopped complying with the state registry laws and saw all those around me claim how brave they were, yet they complied like dogs.
CCDL meetings were gun-free. Oathkeeper meetings were gun-free. The patriot candidates were abandoned because “Oh, someone that far to the right couldn’t even win”. They went centrist. And this happened in all of the neighboring states.
NY and NJ think they are someone they are not. And only noticeable if you’re on the outside looking in.
These people vote to the right, sure. But it’s that right that they put in place that is terrible..
.. “low risk” candidates that don’t have the principles to make a difference, they have the principles to “maybe beat the left”.
Everything that one of these NE conservatives THINK is brave and righteous, is really just cowardice.
Obama and Clinton were elected through fraud.
All leftist candidates win through fraud and cheating.
“You are failing to distinguish between NYC and Upstate.”
No, I’m not. There are simply 5 conservatives in NYC. Upstate are the people claiming to be Conservative but they too are not. RINO. When you quiz them about their position you find out quickly that they aren’t actually conservatives. They start off with conservative statements, wrapping them up with “but” before dismantling them into an easier for a leftist to understand and agree with mess
It’s cowardice.
What I typed out before still stands - they vote to the right, sure. Their homegrown candidates are just milquetoast cowards who aren’t designed to preserve the republic, they are designed to successfully run against the leftist candidates.
And the people - I have YET to be proven wrong - are the reason for this.
I don’t necessarily agree that Trump used the be liberal. To many interviews going back to 80s where his ideology is pretty close to now.
Hey don’t include all the NYS upstaters in your little rant...all ya gotta do is look at the counties in upstate NY that went “red” for Trump on that Elections by county map one can find on the internet.
I won’t go “toe to toe “ with you on this issue ,I’ll step on your toes.
Signed: A very conservative NY native now living in Virginia.
“Im too lazy to do all of that cleaning afterwards, though. “
I hear ya. I own several BP weapons ranging from .32 to .58 caliber. The 58 shoots a 600 gr civil war replica projectile. My favorite is my Walker. I know I should not do this, but just cannot help it. I load each hole in the cylinder level full with 3F, then force the ball into the chamber until flush. Talk about kick, talk about bang. This of course causes the loading lever to come loose and fall down, which the gun was notorious for in the first place. It’s fairly accurate when reasonably loaded, with good projectile penetration.
IMO to do a good job of cleaning, it takes a minimum of 1/2 hour per weapon. The frontiersman did not have that luxury, probably did not have time to run an animal lard patch through it. To replicate this, I have purposely left some of mine uncleaned for months. As long as they stay dry, rust does not set up.
Yesterday I saw a guy at my PA walmart. He got out of his car with NY plates.
Half of the cars here have NY/NJ plates. I’m not exaggerating.
So he gets out of his car and what tattoo do I see on his arm ? A swastika.
Now, am I saying that New Yorkers are all neonazis ? Hardly. Give me a break here, I’m not dumb.
After 30 years of evidence and proof, I can surely tell you that there are so few actual, real conservatives in the NE that it’s a safe stereotype to say that they don’t exist.
Everyone in NY and NJ has liberal mindsets, regardless of party registration. Same in CT and MA. I’ve found more in RI but not enough to exclude them from this list. I have no experience with Californians.
Many people have no experience with Californians but just say stuff about them being morons just because of what we know from the news. Hey, stereotypes don’t just make themselves. There is a reason for them.
And yes, the Swastika thing is real.
You know nothing of New York. It is a BIG state and NYC is a small part of it, way down at the bottom. There are plenty of true conservatives in NY. Look at a red/blue map sometime.
Of course, you already have your mind made up so no point trying to inform the willfully ignorant.
Your stupidity is surpassed only by your willingness to put it on display and brag about it.
“And yes, all of the posters here from NYC and NYS fall into my category. Im from the NE I know what Im talking about here. They vote the most right-wing candidates that they can but they support conservative ideals always with a But.. caveat. They are right wing but only in comparison to those around them.”
Doubling down on stupid is never a wise choice.
[ He decided to randomize himself. ]
At a molecular level...
Sounds like a Democrat voter...Crazy...
You are full of it if you don’t think there are many genuine conservatives in NY.
Because all it takes is ONE to prove you wrong and I am here to tell you, you are wrong.
Thank you.
And I’m still here in NY and I would defy anyone to be more conservative than me.
I vote on that party line every opportunity I can get and I know someone who worked for the Conservative party in Cortland, and he told me that the number of people who actually vote conservative in the elections is about 10 times the number of registered conservative voters.
Many people pick their party affiliation to be able to have some say in the primaries. That’s what I do, but ideologically and politically, I’m as conservative as they come and vote that way every year. Don’t miss voting for ANYTHING.
I’ll take the challenge anytime.
Pittsburg was always leftyish.
And there were other places, in Pa., sans the inflow of people from other states, that weren't as "conservative" as you imagine.
I went to boarding school in Pa. and freshman year was PA. HISTORY, which was as thorough as thorough as can be! And though I haven't been 14 in more decades than I care to say, I remember that class and what I learned in it exceptionally well! So please don't try to impress or correct me about what I post.
Trump was NEVER "VERY LIBERAL"! If you watch the videos of him on YouTube ( since obviously you never paid ANY attention to him before he ran for president, you CAN catch up, now, by watching him on YouTube ), you will see that he said what he says NOW, for many decades in the past!
Unlike YOU, I know many posters, here, as well as people in REAL LIFE, who are CONSERVATIVE, though they live in New England and the Mid Atlantic states.
I was not only born and bred in NYC, but as I said above, also went to school in Pa. and college in New England, and did a graduate degree in NYC. And back when I was still living in NYC, I belonged to the CONSERVATIVE YOUNG REPUBLICANS group.
You really should refrain from talking about a topic you know next to nothing at all about.
