Indonesia orders foreign aid workers helping with tsunami effort to leave
The Guardian UK ^ | 09 Oct 2018 | Kate Lyons

Foreign aid workers who rallied to the island of Sulawesi after the devastating earthquake and tsunami more than a week ago have been asked to leave the country by the Indonesian government...

Clancy said international NGOs had to walk a careful line of not acting paternalistically and taking over aid operations. “There’s pushback against the international community who come flooding in days or weeks later, taking over the response. It’s about taking back that power and saying local organisations have significant capacity.”

The Indonesian government, the Indonesian Red Cross and other Indonesian NGOs all have “significant capacity” for providing humanitarian assistance, said Clancy.

Indonesian officials want money in their pockets, not aid for the afflicted. That’s the problem with a lot of Third World countries. They are poor because the officials are corrupt to the bone. Unfortunately, the fish rots from the head down.

In short, they have cut off their nose to spite their face.

Foreign aid organizations distribute aid directly to the afflicted. Hard for Indonesian officials to steal the aid to resell if it’s being handed out to local inhabitants.

As of late there have been many stories regarding these ‘humanitarian’ organizations and the pertinacity of individuals associated with them in taking advantage of young people and children at every opportunity that presents itself... Haiti in particular comes to mind. Apparently they were running a brothel down there for the ‘aid’ workers.

The last thing they need in Indonesia is more foreigners taking advantage of their youth.

Probably some that we don't know - might be that the help was trying to undermine the government .... sometimes folks providing help have more hubris than compassion in their hearts....times like this, it's best to just provide the assistance and then "march for reform" afterwards.

Not saying that's what actually happened, just providing a possibility.
