The Pentagon intends to invest in domestic manufacturing to reduce its over-reliance on Chinese and other foreign-made parts in American weapons, top defense officials said Thursday.
The U.S. reliance on China is one of many areas discussed in a 146-page report about the health of the defense industrial base that President Trump is scheduled to release on Friday during an event at the White House. Other areas include accelerating workforce development efforts to grow domestic science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and critical trade skills.

The report says China is the only producer of various chemicals needed in missiles and bombs, Japan and European nations are the only suppliers of certain carbon fibers used in missiles, satellites, and space rockets; Germany is the prime supplier of special vacuum tubes for night vision goggles, it says.

There is a program in place for years to void all counterfeit parts from the military. The government was forced to take ghe position by DoD.
I don’t disagree with you. But the price of national security will be higher costs for things like rare earths on the military budget. It may well be that the civilian economy continues to import rare earths at lower costs.
There are rare earths aplenty situated on an island in southern Alaska. The Pentagon wants to mine them but the environmentalists have their processing hamstrung.
The new USMCA treaty should also help to curb Chines influence in NA. Now, he needs to work on eradicating the Chicoms from US strategic minerals Hollywood and Siicon valley.
My suggested addition: No Chinese in the U.S. or elsewhere working on American weaponry.
Way too late to fix that problem.

Japan even sees rice as a “strategic material,” since it’s their main dietary staple. The do everything in their power to be self-sufficient on their supply of rice.
“They also need a federal encouraging the domestic mining of rare earths”
Very true. Something as simple as the flares our planes use to defend against heat seeking missiles have rare earth magnets as a component. The only source for these magnets are the chi coms
Get the Chinese out of manufacturing our pharmaceuticals ASAP.

Their food exports often have bad ingredients, too.
I love our President. It’s so wonderful to have someone who actually cares what happens to America.
IIRC, years ago Chinese dog food proved fatal or at least made a bunch of dogs sick.
Yup, there's a rare earth mine in California, maybe also Nevada. Shut down because of eco-nut policies. Can be reactivated.
Oops: “On July 10, 2017, MP Mine Operations LLC, a Chinese-led consortium including rare earths miner Shenghe Resources, purchased the Mountain Pass mine out of bankruptcy.” Well, so much for reactivating it by Americans; the Chinese are reactivating the mine in California for their purposes.

The tungsten mine I knew of was west of Mt. Tom in the Sierras. Around 1985 backpacking nearby we could hear the blast warning and then the actual blast. Cool stuff!

I remember that! They also exported some toys with lead paint. They undercut honey prices by diluting their honey with a cheaper sweetener. They do all kinds of things.
