The Dems thought the pressure they were bringing would be enough to (1) Have Kavanaugh withdraw and leave or (2) Have Trump pull Kavanaugh’s nomination. The problem they didn’t anticipate was Kavanaugh and Trump called their bluff.

Their testimony was very carefully crafted to be plausible but have enough wiggle room to avoid perjury. Not remembering specifics, phrases that added ambiguity to statements or qualified them to be less than certain.

But it all relied on what usually happens; Republicans get squishy, get cold feet, lose confidence, and slink away.

I think you have nailed right their the root cause of all this. Apparently the D’s didn’t learn anything when the outing of “Grab ‘em by the...” didn’t end Trump’s run.
