Very, very impressive, and reminiscent of sophisticated US intelligence operations (including the Soviet pipeline sabotage of the 80's). Expect foreign electronics manufacturers to decamp en masse from their Chinese plants. Supermicro, the publicly-listed manufacturer at the center of this disaster, is being quoted at almost half the price it was yesterday. It will probably go bust.

I read a novel like this about 10 years ago. Can't remember the title.

The did this back in 2008, too. The Government had to pull thousands of hard drives from big-name US manufacturers because a controller chip — made in China — was phoning home with files stored on the drives.
Two domains were hard-wired into the chips, both .cn.

I have never recommended a Super Micro kit to anyone for any reason. I am surprised to see so many top tier tech companies put their trust in 2nd tier server manufacturer. Doesn’t make sense.
Dell enough said.

If you have your stuff made in China you get a little extra

Sorry dumbasses. That is what you get for manufacturing your crap in China. Backdoor hardware....

What?! I'm shocked!! Shocked I say!!!
Who could have guessed that letting China manufacture our high tech could result in infiltration???
Every high tech company needs to report their exposure to Chinese manufacturing and the steps they have taken to confirm their products have not been hacked and remedial steps to prevent them from being hacked in the future.
I have just one word for tech companies offshoring to China....

I did, too. I can’t remember the title, either. I think it was one of the Kindle books I read like eating M&Ms. The one I read had the premise that the Chicoms had put kill switches in millions of chips and simply sent the command to turn them all off.

Tom Clancy did something similar in The Bear and the Dragon. Only it was a CIA agent planting a virus in a Chinese Politburo computer. (ironic.)

Years ago I was looking at the Lenovo Thinkpad. As soon as I found out Lenovo was a Communist Chinese company, Thinkpad became a non-contender.
We are under constant attack by Communist China. No matter how friendly they seem, they are our sworn enemy.

well at least we now know where the writers for “Silicon Valley” came up with “Pied Piper”, the color for their logo, and the story-line for their revolutionary compression algorithm ...

The super gaming computer I just built has an MSI otherboard, AMD 8core cpu and a high end MSI gpu. Point is I was very careful buying trustworthy components.

Wise decision. IBM hardware was overpriced, but it was rock solid. Lenovo got use of the IBM brand name for a few years as a condition of the purchase, and prices came down in line with its severely watered down quality, post-acquisition. Lenovo prices are decent, but I’ve never been tempted.

Any of you tech wizards know of a utility to sniff one’s pc for spy crap like this ?
Specifically for Asus mobos ?
Not like there’s anything on my machines the bastards would be after,
but it’s like craving a shower after seeing a pic of Hitlary, Carville, et al.

Gee, it’s almost like “free trade” is a mistake.
And letting your supply chain be dependent on an enemy like China is unwise !

With all that is going on, this is the most important story of the day, and it will reverberate for months, if not years.
