Last pocket of ISIS fighters surrounded in Syria, says US military
Washington Examiner ^ | 10/2/2018 | Jamie McIntyre

U.S.-backed fighters are closing in on the “last pocket of ISIS resistance” in Syria, and remaining ISIS fighters are becoming increasingly desperate, the U.S. military said Tuesday.

The final offensive against ISIS in Syria is dubbed “Operation Roundup” and was started three weeks ago by the Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, a coalition of Arab and Kurdish fighters trained, equipped, and advised by the U.S.

“As ISIS retreats, they're employing improvised explosive devices along routes and booby-trapping houses to inflict casualties as the SDF fighters clear through the terrain,” said Col. Sean Ryan, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad.

He said ISIS has been firing mortars indiscriminately in an attempt to distract the pursuing forces.

“These tactics clearly demonstrate the growing desperation of ISIS as the SDF slowly closes in on the last group of remaining fighters in Syria," he said.

The U.S. says the ISIS fighters have nowhere to run, and are methodically being captured or killed the anti-ISIS fighters.

More than 2,300 men, women, and children have been taken into custody by the SDF forces, including about 700 adult male combatants.

The fighting is centered in Syria’s Middle Euphrates River Valley, or MERV, near the Iraqi border in the far east of the country.

In the past week, two more cities have been liberated by the SDF as they push northward.

“Let me be clear: ISIS is not yet defeated,” said Ryan, adding that ISIS fighters are “in the final throes of their evil ambitions.”

We’ll have to call Saudi Arabia to find out what they want done with them.

Great job Barry Odumbo. You once again get to see what a real adult leader can accomplish leading a great nation. With you we got the very typical affirmative action hire. EPIC FAIL there jug ears.

If ISIS is being defeated in the East, good for the USA but in the North in Idlib the ISIS pocket there faces Syrian troops with Iranians and Russian airpower.

Now the Turks are in on a demilitarized zone plan.

Who’s going to take them out. I would think the nations I mentioned above.

Thanks for the update.

Probably more like weeks than months left for ISIS around Hajin.

The Kurdish-led SDF is still courageously taking the fight to ISIS on the ground, and rooting them out at close range, with tightly integrated air support from us and our coalition allies.

A lot of folks don’t appreciate that our allies are pulling triggers, pulling lanyards, and dropping bombs on ISIS along with us.

The French aircraft carrier the Charles DeGaulle has been steady bombing ISIS in Syria since a high profile terrorist incident in France, only scooting back to home port in Toulon periodically to restock their ordnance. They have gone so far as to have an artillery unit on the ground directly supporting the assault on Hajin. The Brits have been getting their combat flight hours in too. The Jordanians have been getting some, as have the Iraqis (who previously fought the biggest urban battle since Stalingrad against ISIS in Mosul).

Nobody in this battle beats those Syrian Kurds for commitment though. They have the hard job of kicking the doors in, and shooting those ISIS guys in their faces.

A heartfelt salute for all our boys, and all our allies, who are taking on ISIS, and smacking them down.

A major strategic error.

Bump. Final ISIS pocket to be eliminated will be those who took over with Turkey in Efrin (Afrin) When the fighting is over in the East of Syria, It will be taken to Efrin again. They are moving radical Jihadi’s from Idlib to Efrin.

Erdogan may have his military busy elsewhere before then. Not making predictions when. Without the Jihadi’s (ISIS, al Qaeda (Nusra) and the Chinese Muslims he is not nearly as tough except for our NATO aircraft. He has even arrested another 120 Turkish Air Force personnel by naming them associated with Kurds. At some point, Turks will face Kurds. If there is an airpower leveler, Turks might lose.
