It appears he has grown a lot more pessimistic and sees the almost inevitable clash coming, but I suspect he doesn’t want to spell it out that clearly. In the Revolutionary War and again in the Civil War, people were working hard on reconciliation and peace up until war came.
Agreed, this is probably his most pessimistic of all observations. From a historical perspective it is devastating.
