I think it was different. Then few parties i went to in the 80s... there were kegs, there were bottles of beer, but for the most part, BYOB. No bowls of punch sitting around.

Again, in scope, these are unchaperoned parties where kids could possibly do things like gang rape (which didn’t happen...)
