That is so stupid. The threat of the death penalty is often enough to persuade someone that telling the truth in exchange for a life sentence is a better alternative.

The WaPo’s favorite lapdog once again earnestly misses the point. Data reveal that when the death penalty was temporarily suspended nationwide back in the 80’s capital crimes increased significantly. When the states, following SCOTUS guidelines, reinstated the death penalty the rate of capital crimes decreased dramatically. The point being, in the best possible controlled experiment nationwide, death proves to be an effective deterrent to those crimes for which it is used. And it may be added that the more expeditiously and efficiently it is applied, the more deterrent efffect it has.
