Canadas parliament on Thursday voted unanimously to strip Myanmars de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi of her honorary Canadian citizenship, given in 2007 for her efforts toward building democracy.
The motion introduced in the House of Commons comes after the parliament expressed its support for a motion adopted last week to recognize the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar as an act of genocide.
Our government supported this motion in response to her continued failure to speak out against the genocide of the Rohingya, a crime being committed by the military with which she shares power, said Adam Austen, press secretary to Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland.
We will continue to support the Rohingya people through humanitarian assistance, targeted sanctions against Myanmars generals and by pushing for accountability for those responsible through an appropriate international body, he continued.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had told reporters on Wednesday that he was open to revoking Suu Kyis citizenship but said doing so would not solve the crisis in Myanmar.
Suu Kyi shared the Canadian honor with the likes of Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, the Aga Khan and Malala Yousafzai.

“Suu Kyi will invite Japan back in if/when they remilitarize?”
I haven’t heard anything about that.
But Burma has a border with China, and a major immigration issue with Chinese in the North, as well as Chinese corruption of Government officials and strong-arming on natural resources.
It didn't take much to set off Japanese Buddhists (even though it was probably their Shintoism that really made them do it).
Rohingya were attacking Burmese, so they pushed them across the border into Bangla Desh where they are among other muslims. I don’t think they want to go back to Burma.
The so called Conservative Party here in Canada are gutless appeasers. Not a single Member of Parliament opposed this disgusting motion. We are just another Euro-weenie nation.
State Shinto was a different animal to be sure. And there are revanchists for that in Japan’s government today.
Aung San Suu Kyi is surely not terribly concerned with Canada, She is more concerned with the survival of Burmese people as non Moslems. There is not a nice politically correct way to deal with a Saracen invasion.
