U.S. Is Poised This Week to Endorse UN Refugee Compact that Contradicts Administration Goals

Just days after announcing a lower refugee-resettlement ceiling for the coming fiscal year, the Trump administration is poised to endorse the UN's Global Compact on Refugees, which is in total contradiction to the administration's refugee policies.

From the posted article:

"By agreeing to officially sign this agreement in a few days, President Trump would be setting the grounds for the United States (and its future administrations) to partly abide by UN rulings on refugee assistance, whether abroad or on American soil. This would also mean relying on organizations like the IRC to carry on with the compact's tasks."

I have no problem assisting refugees in camps near their home countries. Just don’t bring them halfway around the world.

If memory serves me correctly, Trump stated in his UN speach today that he will NOT agree to the UN Refugee Compact.

FAKE NEWS

That is not what was said

Plus President Trump has no problem with settling refugees close to where they live so they can return to rebuild their homes and villages.

Just trying to rile up the base against Trump uh?

He did. It seems that there are people working in the government that ignore him.

In the past few months, multiple articles have been posted at Free Republic praising Trump's two decisions to cut Refugee Resettlement in the USA.

First, Trump cut Obama’s goal of 120,000 refugees per year down to 45,000 per year.

Recently, Trump cut his own goal of 45,000 down to 30,000.

Now, he's on the brink of throwing it all away.

Conservatives need to hold Trump's feet to the political fire on EVERY immigration issue, or he will not follow through.

Please note - before you start arguing with me about any immigration issue, please do your research.

Thanks.

Immigration has been my number one issue at Free Republic since 2005, when George W. Bush and John McCain tried to shove Amnesty down our throats.

I saw this in the article:

"...According to Türk, the refugee compact's adoption by the UN General Assembly at the end of this month will be a demonstration of "a very strong political commitment of all 193 Member States to implement it, even if it's not legally binding..."

What is your opinion on this? Is Trump trying to score political points by appearing to support it, and perhaps not abide by it because there is no legal mandate (it is a compact, not a treaty) or is he throwing in the towel?

Thanks for your Comments.

I word scanned Trump's UN speech, and he mentioned “Refugees” only twice.

Both references were to settling refugees as close as possible to their country of origin.

Sounds good, but.....

The USA is a charter member of the United Nations “Global Compact on Refugees.”

The UN is going to vote on the final draft of that Compact very soon, possibly this week.

Trump made no mention of that Compact, which, as I recall, was initiated during the Obama Administration.

That Compact will strip the USA of its sovereign powers and essentially dictate how many refugees we must accept, who can be classified as a “refugee” (every poor person in the world!), and what kind of background check (no background check!) must be performed before a refugee is sent to the USA.

I repeat - Trump never mentioned this Compact, before or during his speech.

Is the USA going to vote in favor of the Compact?

It sure looks like it.

Re: “you need to direct your efforts towards little miss nicki haley, not President Trump.”

Right - because Nicki Haley is in charge of our UN policies, not President Trump.

Re: Not Legally Binding

A good point, which I failed to mention.

So, Trump might - or might not - enforce the UN Compact.

However, we can be certain that the default refugee policy of every RINO or Democrat president who follows Trump will be the UN Compact.

And we can be certain that every future president who is criticized for enforcing the Compact will point out that Donald Trump signed it.

Today was an opportunity for Trump to assert America’s sovereignty on immigration and reject the Compact.

But Trump never mentioned it.

Normally, I don’t go in for dissembling, but after the last couple weeks of Kavanaugh abuse by the Left, if he isn’t outright lying, I would be on board with it.

Especially if he really, REALLY pisses of the Left by refusing to “participate”.

But I would rather he did as he did with the Paris Climate Accord, where he came out on world wide television and called it a “wealth redistribution scheme” which made me nearly fall off my chair. Truth from elected officials can do that to me.

Love the man for that.

I will call the White House tonight and leave my opinion on this.

I am not worried, President Trump will always put America first.

He is not going to allow some cheesehead from France dictate how many refugees we are going to take. He is not stupid.

This man, is NOT stupid.

Why do we all treat him like he is?

United States Ends Participation in Global Compact on Migration

https://usun.state.gov/remarks/8197

Today, the U.S. Mission to the United Nations informed the UN Secretary-General that the United States is ending its participation in the Global Compact on Migration.

U.S. participation in the Compact process began in 2016, following the Obama Administration’s decision to join the UN’s New York Declaration on migration. The New York Declaration contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with U.S. immigration policy and the Trump Administration’s immigration principles. As a result, President Trump determined that the United States would end its participation in the Compact process that aims to reach international consensus at the UN in 2018.

Trump mentioned over and over that the U S will NOT comply with the demands of others. He stressed the SOVEREIGNTY of our country and our right to put America FIRST. NOTHING he said would make me believe he is going to go against his own decisions regarding immigrants. Just more anti-Trump dust thrown in the air.

But Trump never mentioned it.
..........................................
He didn’t have to mention it. He constantly stressed American Sovereignty and our right to make our own decisions about out country. His entire speech pounded this message that we will not be held to edicts of unelected bureaucrats. I am confident that we will RETAIN our sovereignty and will NOT go along with whatever the UN has in mind. He told all the countries that we will not be the patsy any more.

i too am sick and tired of the constant theroies and worries that Trump is leading the country into the pits. FReepers are supposed to have the ability to think. Unfortunately too many would rather mouth off on all the negatives they can dream up than SUPPORT our president and give him credit for having a brain. I find it disgusting.

she is our UN ambassador. It is her job to make sure Trump’s policies vis a vis the UN are communicated and carried thru. If there’s a deviation from the policy by underlings, it is her job to break out the whip and set the course straight.
