I keep hoping that a bit of empathy for Martin Luther may eventually arise. He didn’t set out to leave the Roman Catholic Church. He sought to reform it. Leaving was not his choice, either.
With him and with the 180 which the church did with the reformation, they were around to organize a navy (led by the Venecian Empire) to repel a Muslim invasion by sea at Lepanto and an army (led by King Jan Soebeski) to repel an invasion by land at the Seige of Vienna over the next two centuries.
Neither of these pivotal events would have happened without first cleansing the church of near terminal corruption.
