We have no idea at this point if she ever told him if she was 16, she might have, she might have not. Now the only defense he could possibly have is, did he ask her her age? Even then, minors have lied about their ages and the men, still went to jail. So my opinion, this guy screwed himself here.
Also him meeting her at a hotel room and paying her $500 bucks isn’t going to set well with the jury, the prosecutor will paint her as the innocent, confused, child and him as a dirty old creepy sex predator. So the only way out of this will be some sort of plea deal, which will include jail time.

Yes you are right, but in the end of the day, that won’t matter. Minors have lied about their ages before and men have went to jail for it. It is his responsibility to verify and vet her out.
Maybe she told him she was really 16 and he still wanted to meet her and did? Those details will come out in trial, if it goes to trial. He is not going to win at trial.

When situations like this involve adults and minors, it is expected, under the law, that the adult act like the adult.

I’m a strong advocate for not just strongly punishing but actually executing convicting pedophiles but I think this reeks of setup.

If she was found out to be a minor on that site, she would be in violation of the sites TOS (terms of service) and her account would be suspended/deleted. Just like any other site that has age restrictions.
A setup would involve the government initiating the string of events.
This wasn’t the old To Catch A Predator, where Chris Hansen would meet the pervs, who were thinking they were meeting a 13 year old boy or girl, at the bait house and the cops would show up and arrest them.
I never heard a government setup that would allow a 16 year old girl (a real 16 year old girl) to actually meet the perv, go to his hotel room, have sex with him, collect $500 and then tell her counselor a few weeks later. Setups don’t work that way.
Minors have presented fake IDs that are virtually indistinguishable from valid IDs that clearly and unequivocally "prove" they are of age, and the men have still gone to jail.
Don't piss off the government. They will get you, whether statutory rape, planted drugs, kiddie porn injected into your computer, false charges of fondling 35 years ago, or a fellow detainee who will be released if only they say they overheard you confessing to a crime.

This whole thing has way too many variables and I don’t ever know of any incident where the federal government actually used an actual 16 year old and allowed the perv to have sex with her. Usually the “to catch a predator” scenarios used adults and adult actors to play the “kids” at the bait house. No actual minors were put into harms way.

Oh, c’mon. For billions of people on the planet, this would have been completely legal. 16 is not pedophilia. Its not even abnormal. Its biologically sound. It is just socially inappropriate as an artifact of Victorianism. A 16 year old who is advertising on escort websites is not a victim.
And, if the crime is paying for sex, that should be her problem. not his.
