In the original Ghostbusters, Chevy Chase was supposed to play Dr Veckman. When you think about it, Veckman’s character was very Chevy Chase-like. However, Chase turned down the part and Bill Murry took it. Clearly, Bill Murry’s version of Chevy Chase is infinitely better than Chevy Chase’s own.
I think that’s what really launched Bill Murry’s career. Before that, he always played an idiot-like character.
