CHICAGO A California man has been charged with shooting a Cicero police officer in a wild shootout near I-55 on Thursday.
Daniel Mageo, 27, was denied bail Saturday during a bond hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building, 2650 S. California Ave. Mageo was previously convicted of human trafficking and had outstanding warrants for a parole violation and a sex offense.
"He is the poster child for no bail and thats exactly what hes going to get," Cook County Judge John Fitzgerald Lyke Jr., said. "No bail."
Cicero police Officer Luis Duarte, 32, was shot three times Thursday on Cicero Avenue near I-55 in Chicago. He and his partner were in uniform in an unmarked squad car when they tried to stop a black Mercedes that was driving erratically.
The officers boxed in the car, prosecutors said, and Mageo got out shooting. The officers returned fire, but Duarte was shot in his shoulder, hip and leg before Mageo took off running, authorities said.
A good Samaritan with a concealed carry license got of his car and fired shots toward Mageo, but missed, according to Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Guy Lisuzzo. Mageo continued to shoot at police, but Duarte's partner was able to stop him by shooting the man multiple times in his ankle and leg.
Mageo then yelled at the officer that he should kill him, Lisuzzo said. Mageo had a semiautomatic gun with an extended clip; he had fired every bullet.
Mageo was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated battery. He remained hospitalized Saturday and did not appear in court.
Cicero police Supt. Jerry Chlada Jr. said Duarte continues to recover at Mount Sinai Hospital.
"Hes doing much better," Chlada said. "Hes resting comfortably. He had two surgeries so far. Yesterday was a long day for him. He was in surgery for five hours. But everything went well and hes resting comfortably right now."
I wonder if he was one of the criminals Jerry Brown released from prison?
Oh, Mageo, youve done it again.
Moonbeam probably thought he was going to turn his life around.
His mama said he was a good boy except while he was slashing people to death or shooting them in the face multiple times. Just misguided.
Is that so, or do they want to diminish the contribution of the good Samaritan?
He well may have missed. A very high percentage of people with carry permits never practice shooting. They get the permit and think they are experts. I know because I teach carry permit classes as well as advanced pistol and never see 90% of the carry holders after the initial class.
