you’re right about the first debate, but it was done about 5 weeks out from the election.
Who was undecided by then ? Who was going to change their vote because of the debate ?
The polls at the time showed almost a dead heat...yet Pres. Obama buried Romney in the electoral and by about almost 5 million in the popular.
So, were the polls whacked or was it really that close ?

what is interesetig is that the 2016 election had almost 8 million more voters than 2012 - 4 years ?
Hillary’s losing total was 100k short of Obama’s winning total in 2012.

Don't know if our precinct was a nationwide symptom but we had just average turnout for a presidential election year in 2012. By 2016, I was judge and we had people lining up 45 minutes before the polls even opened and turnout well above average. Mitt just didn't inspire above average turnout, to put it mildly, whereas Trump did.
