Gov. 'Moonbeam' says California to launch climate satellite

California Gov. Jerry Brown said Friday that the state plans to launch its "own damn satellite" into orbit to battle climate change.

The man the late Chicago columnist Mike Royko famously dubbed "Gov. Moonbeam" made the announcement at the conclusion of a two-day climate summit he organized in San Francisco.

Before Brown's announcement, two prominent Democrats and a Republican mayor criticized Trump for his decision to withdraw the United States from the landmark Paris climate accord.

"While Donald Trump may have pulled out of the climate agreement, the American people have not," former Secretary of State John Kerry said opening the second day of the Global Climate Action Summit.

Kerry, also a Democrat, called Trump's decision "the single greatest act of irresponsibility of any president of the United States at any time."

Former Vice President Al Gore followed Kerry to the stage and got a rousing ovation when he said a new president can rejoin the Paris Agreement.

Gore, a Democrat, also criticized Trump's recent denial that 3,000 people died in Puerto Rico in 2017 because of Hurricane Maria.

Some day, some hour, some minute in the not so distant future, much, much sooner than later, some clerk working for the State of California will write a check to a vendor for a very minor purchase, perhaps pencils, or sheaf of paper. And when the vendor cashes that check, it will be the straw that broke the camel's back.

It will cause a chain reaction to be triggered, rippling through the whole finance system of California. The house of cards will come tumbling down so fast, and so out of control, that everyone will be caught off guard. That check will trigger then end of California. No one saw or anticipated it, just as no one anticipates walking in front of a speeding car or falling off a cliff to his death.

And that will be the end of California as we know it.

Your scenario is probably something that would occur within ten to fifteen years.

I think they will reach the stage where they approach Congress and ask for a 250 billion dollar loan (zero interest), and the red states basically say ‘no’. Then the red states will insist on fundamental reforms to be written into the California constitution (like state and local retirement), and to have the state supreme court stamp it as official. It’ll never happen, and the state will basically fail at that point.

Over the next decade, home values decline....businesses will shut down, and California will become Mexico-West.

The federal agencies in question will probably have no objections to such a launching.

That the purpose of the launch is to make a costly and perhaps pointless political gesture is irrelevant.

There have been approved launches to propel automobiles into space - why should there be any objections to this one?
