Crankyweatherguy is saying that the models are starting to pick up on the “funneling” effect of the mountains. I don’t understand the technical details well enough to completely understand his blog.

Yes, I am so grateful to God that Florence was not a category 4 storm when it hit land.
I am in the Raleigh, NC area. (Wake County) Lost power for 3 hours only so far. We are still having major rain bands. For instance, power is out in ALL of Pamlico county.
The worst issue is the massive power outages in Eastern and Southeastern NC along with the flooding that’s coming early next week.
I had power off just once for 3 days. That was plenty inconvenient.....Had it been any longer I was getting out of town.
Report from Leland (just west of Wilmington)...steady rain, still some wind gusts. Damage to businesses, trees down everywhere. Cape Fear river supposed to crest late Sunday night/Monday morning.
We got our power back a couple of hours ago.
Went driving around town. They are doing a good job of getting everybody’s power back on.
The Places that are open are packed. KFC and the Saigon Bistro on lower Bragg Blvd. Between Harris Teeter and Publix there is 5 Guys Burgers, C-F-L, Hunan Gardens and a couple of others I didn’t note. Publix was open and packed - Cars out to the Hardee’s (closed) on Raeford Road.
Gas stations on Robeson Steet and Intersection of Rosehill and Ramsey were open. Didn’t go any further north on Ramsey.
Just did a big figure 8 from the north side, through Haymount, down to Cape Fear Valley Hospital and back.
I understand that they are now predicting 27 feet ABOVE flood stage.

...The NWS Newport/Morehead City office reported that 25.77 inches of rain has fallen at their Hoffman Remote Operated Weather Station (RAWS).
That rainfall total breaks the old record of 24.06 inches set during Hurricane Floyd in 1999.
In addition to the official report, an unofficial report from a weather observer said 30.59 inches of rain was recorded 1 mile north of Swansboro.
Additional rain will continue to fall into next week causing rain totals to only increase...
Many years ago as a kid I saw some cans of dehydrated water on vacation. Then in college a friend of mine had a quart can of same. Fortunately never had a need for the dehydrated water.
But you may be glad to know that Amazon does have a stock of dehydrated water available!

A poster on http://www.wxdisco.com/ is reporting both coastal radar stations in NC are out. The Raleigh station reaches down there, but not well.
They’re saying the Wilmington radar came back on line. Whew.
27 feet above flood stage explains why all of the Fayetteville local management looked terrified during their press conference. They said it was worse than 2 years ago during Matthew.
There are a lot of people that will think with the rain slackening for a day or so, that the event is over and will get on the road to return home.
I think there will be a lot of road closures due to these rising rivers and stranded travelers.
I like a high clearance vehicle for just this reason — you never know what you are driving into.
Des Moines, IA, had a bunch of nasty flash flooding at the end of July. A prominent local sports guy drowned in the street in an upscale neighborhood. Ever since, my wife wants a friggin’ Range Rover, the big one. Wades 3 ft of water, but what a pain! Her mother will have to buy it for her.

* Forecast...The river will rise above flood stage by tonight and
continue to rise to near 62.4 feet by Tuesday early afternoon.
* Impact...At 64.0 feet, Several thousand acres of land and hundreds
of structures on both sides of the river will be flooded. Water
reaches the under-clearance of the downstream railroad trestle.
Downstream about 2 miles, the river will spread to a width of
approximately 1 mile.
It may still breath in 3’ but I bet it washes away or floats away.
My brother has a Land Rover. I can’t get in it without hitting my head or cranking my neck.
