When I was in college in the early 1980s, I studied in an Anthropology course how language reflects social status. Made perfect sense, and we tracked power relationships accordingly. The prof was amazing and entirely non-judgmental. We just observed and came to understand the relationship between language and social interactions.
Sadly, it was a quick step for subsequent academics into condemning those differences, which is now the norm. Bloody idiots. They have no concern for what is, just what they think should be, and they therefore ignore why.
